Title: Miamisburg 2018 Stage for competition
Post by: the Earl of Whirl on February 11, 2018, 06:58:31 AM
As we have been looking around at possible stages for nationals in Miamisburg, I have come up with a few questions.  What is a good size for a spin top competition?  What about ceiling height?  What about stage height?  We have a number of possibilities but I am also wondering about logistics and what would give us our best audience.

I would say to gather a list of possible venues in the area. We can better make a selection from that. Thanks for working on this!

hello mike

I M O , it doesn't have to be so big !! ;D
20 feet clearance is enough for tops (maybe not for diabolos)
as jose wrote , you could start by visiting and take pictures to compare

Just Curious,  I know during the morning hours of the Whirled Festival of Tops most Top Players are at the church spinning tops and catching up with old friends. Could Nationals be held on the same stage in the "Morning Hours" and then the Whirled Festival of Top Activities held in the "Evening Hours"?

I don't know about the time frame for a Nationals Spin Top Contest, so I don't know if this is possible.

If the car show is in town and with the public out for the other activities, that stage would give the public a excellent view of both events. It would also exposed the public to a National Spin Top Contest.

Just a Thought.

Hello Shootist.  Good comments from everyone.  Yes, I think it would be great to use the big stage we have for the kids to spin for their little competitions.  Everything would be in one place and there is lots of space.  Sadly, this is outside and Dale Oliver said he and others would prefer to not have an outdoor championships because of heat, dampness and the outside possibility of rain.

The obvious choice in town would be the Baum opera house, which is a very short walk between the church and the outdoor stage.  It has a large stage with a high ceiling and lots of space for spectators.  It is also air conditioned but it has already been reserved for a wedding.  Rats!!!

Another possibility in walking distance is Memorial Hall (owned by the schools and is the former high school stage) but it is not air conditioned.  The new theater, right next to the outdoor stage, has wonderful cushioned seats and a wide stage plus air conditioning.  But it is only 10 feet deep and there might be concerns about tops hitting the screen.  I, personally, know that we would NEVER miss and hit the screen but others might not have the same confidence in us.

The American Legion is next to Bullwinkle's Top Hat Bistro (great ribs, right Eli?).  They have a carpeted stage and A/C.  The stage appears to be wide enough and deep enough but does not have much ceiling height.  Across the street from that is a big old honking historic building that has a gym floor on the third floor!!! It also has a nice stage but no elevator.  I am not sure about air conditioning but there is plenty of ceiling height there.

Personally, I would like for us to consider the possibility of a simpler option....the fellowship hall (Albrecht Hall) at my church (St. Jacob).  Everybody's equipment would be there.  People could use the stage area (taped floor or a short stage brought in) to practice during the morning or early afternoon.  And we could entertain early arrivers outside before the competition.  Maybe displays could be set up for the day?  Many people have been there so others know of the space which has fairly high ceilings and the possibility of nice crowd support and cheering as the hall is not as large as a gym.

There are some other stages we could drive to but, once again, it would be time taken away for travel and we would have to haul away our equipment, then haul it back again for the kid's battles in the  evening.

Very good ribs, they're almost as good as two pieces of pizza.

For many years the US National yo-yo and spintop contest was on a stage outdoors. I have fond memories  ;)

I have no problem with the outdoor stage, except that there needs to be a second option in case it rains.
The church's stage seems like a very convenient option for us, even if we probably wouldn't have as many of the general public.

Very good ribs, they're almost as good as two pieces of pizza.
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
At least I left a memorable quote in spintop lore.

I am willing to listen to other opinions.  I always had the idea that our humidity was worse around here than in Chico but if people are willing to freestyle outside the park stage would work out nicely.  Yes, we can have backup plans in case of rain or tornados or snow.

PS....I went to a boys basketball game at our local high school tonight.  It was quite an event with Senior Night (to highlight 12th graders) and the large pep band and all the cheer squads.  They even had a hip hop group from the school do a halftime show.  The game was also exciting and dramatic as it was hotly contested and very close.  But the highlight for me was the piece of pepperoni pizza I ate from the concession stand.  It was so good I went back for a second piece of pizza.  The woman waiting on me said "this makes two pieces of pizza for you."  I smiled and said "funny you should say that."

Late input. Stage should be at least 16 feet wide, and if you can, at least 8 feet deep, with 20 feet vertical clearance. That should work well for tops and yoyo, indoors and out. Even off-string yoyo can handle these specs. It's typically the 4A players who need the most stage anyways.

It's always a good idea to check the forum calendar (one of the tabs above).  ;)
It says August 25th.
It seems many people are planning to attend, including me!  :)

Had a good conversation with the city people today.  They are behind us and almost want to help too much.  The mayor has the idea that a band would be great for our event.  I am trying to point out things like -going after us is late -there will be too much extra activity with a band setting up and us enjoying all our time -no, we do not want to move our event earlier -we are not people who need entertainment.  We make our own entertainment.  We just need space!!!

My idea is still 5-8 at the park and be at the church earlier during the day.  3pm for national championships would be great and I am leaning toward having it at St. Jacob with all our equipment handy and people already there.  Moving once to the park seems like enough moving to me.

I thought we had been talking about this but I guess we were just talking about the stage.  Thanks for asking mailman!  The city has pr people working on getting information out so I presented the following to them.  Tell me what a I missed or how I can change it.  They are still willing to accept more information...

THE WHIRLED COMES TO MIAMISBURG

It will be Christmas in August this year as the 25th of that month will be a unique and special gathering of top spinners from around the nation.  People will be here from Alabama, Texas, Georgia, New York and our neighboring states to toss one of a kind creations and do amazing tricks.  Can you believe there will be several world champions here?  Can you believe there will be world record holders here?  Can you believe people present will have been on the world top spinning stage dozens of times?  Whirled experience will be everywhere on that day.  Join us for the national championships at 3pm in the St. Jacob Lutheran Church fellowship hall.  Join us at 5pm on the Riverfront Park stage as youth battle spin tops with the winner collecting 100 $2.00 bills (remember - a two dollar bill is 200 pennies and this is the 200th anniversary of Miamisburg).

You can read more about this event and other spinning activities at Miamisburg.org/tops or at itopspin.com

Hello Lynn.  Thanks for your comments.  Glad you will make it.  Yes, it has been hectic around here with Lent, extra services and Easter preparations.  I finally got the April newsletter out and then taxes.  Seems like it is time to relax a bit and throw some tops!!!

Sorry for not getting to your post sooner, jmadrigal.  Dale Oliver says he prefers indoor and A/C for the competition.  We can do that at the church and then go outside for the evening battles in the park where we can highlight the new US champ and the other placers.  Does that sound OK?

Wow, the city of Miamisburg is working hard to fix up the park area where we have met for youth battles and informal adult spinning over the past few years.  They have been laying cement like crazy to finish sidewalks around the whole park.  They have also increased some parking and now are adding cool looking brick walkways across the new road between the backs of the buildings and the stage.  This road looked more like an alley the past few years.  Soon they will be finishing the landscaping and grass planting around the whole park area.  The place should look great by this summer.

Most of the hobo spinners, we stay under the bridge over the Miami river at Linden Ave. Good spinning areas around and walking distance to Bullwinkles' Top Hat Bistro :P

I'm arriving Friday and leaving Monday.  :)

No, but it's a short drive.  If wheels are an issue, you could ride to and from with us, if you'd like....

A lovely place that is easy walking distance to all things top, but more expensive than the bridge.  It would be cool to fill the place with top spinners.

Ha ha!!!  Good one Larry.  Yes, they are missing out by not listing the Spin Top HOF.  I see the trapshooting hall of fame made it.

In local news, they have been laying asphalt like crazy at the Riverfront Park area.  People are really working hard to make that space very special for the 200th celebration (and for our top fest).  I went through the barriers late last night and was the first to ride on the smooth and fresh asphalt.  I felt like a kid again biking along that new parking lot surface!!!

We are winding down our week long celebration of the bicentennial, the city's 200th birthday.  We had a big parade last Saturday and another even bigger parade today.  I rigged up a 3 wheel bicycle that would take our 96 year old choir director on the back.  It worked out great and many people saw his WWII veterans hat and clapped and yelled "thanks for your service."  Our good friend Jay Robinson is everywhere taking pictures and posting them for the city.  He says he is anxious to do the same for our top fest on the 25th of August.

One very touching part of the ceremonies was when they dug up a time capsule from the celebration 50 years ago.  So many interesting things came out including some with names on them of people I had funerals for.  Just a few minutes ago they resealed the new time capsule full of items to be buried and not dug up until 2068.  Right before they closed the lid I ran up and got a Toycrafter top in and said "Miamisburg is tops.  The nationals will be here this year."  With that they took off and sealed the capsule.  I don't think I will be here to see it opened but my wife said she will be 95 and just might remember me for a moment at that time.

Great move, Mike! Not just the top in the capsule, but marrying a woman 20 year younger!  :P

If in 2068 they recognize the spintop and know how to use it, it would mean that ITSA has done its job!  :)

It's about 60 days away, people! Polish your crowns, detangle your strings and sharpen your tips....See you all in Miamisburg in August!

I tried to add a countdown counter to the thread but I'm too stupid to figure out how to make it happen.

I am hoping to test for the 16 trick patch at the meetup. Will anyone be available to assess the tricks? There were several of us who took home 8 trick patches last year who were planning to test for 16 this year.

So, is there a schedule being worked for the nationals?

We should have a good turnout. I think there should be a ladder for people not ready to freestyle.

Preregistration?

I figure we should have music ready as well. Should we just bring it along or submit it in advance?

We should talk about battles as well.

This might be in the works, but just wanted to get the conversation started.

I am in Houston for our five day national Lutheran gathering.  So far, only on top in sight among 30,000 people and that is the one I brought.

Often, John Marcus hosts people who want to visit his place on Friday evening.  Saturday morning the joke is that we can find him under a tree at 9am on the church lawn at St. Jacob.  Usually there is a lunch break around noon or one.  Dale says they need just one hour for competition so my idea was to do that at 3pm.  At 5pm we move down to the main stage at Riverfront park and organize kids battles while adults spin in the grass.  The event is officially over at 8pm then we head to Bullwinkle's Top Hat Bistro for some sustenance.  Often people stop by the Hall of Fame after the meal.  We have had a number of people stay for worship on Sunday at 10:30 or noon.

That is a general overview of what we have done in the past!

Finally, a slight connection here in Houston.  I met a guy from Ashland, Ohio with a kendama.  He seemed quite interested in some of my spin top tricks.  He was very impressive with his kendama work so I told him about Worlds in Cleveland next year.  He was excited about all the possibilities and the fact that it was so close.  Sadly, we do not really have any kendama activity in Miamisburg so I could not get him going in that direction.

While here at the Hilton Americas I got an idea to try a new challenge.  How many flights can one go up with a top spinning in their hand.  I got up seven of them.  I will try for eight before we leave tomorrow for home to get ready for the nationals in the Burg.

I made it up 8 flights before leaving Houston.  I think more physical top spinning could be in my future as I try to stay active and incorporate spinning into all of that.  Looking online I found the tallest building in Miamisburg (outside of our steeple) has 9 flights.  Sound like a good goal and something I can talk about to others while promoting Aug. 25th.

If no one else wants to do it, I will be glad to MC.  As far as music, we have a handy CD player there.  I am assuming people will come with other ways to play their music so I am hoping someone can help with that.

I will be happy to open the freestyles with a low scoring and light hearted freestyle.  I have challenged Jim Neff to follow suit and also have a fun routine with some of his creative items.  After that, I am assuming people like both Hickersons, Kirk, Tom and maybe John Buechele might freestyle along with jmadrigal.

The last sports trick list of tricks included 40 tricks from which people could pick and chose. It has been recently proposed to make it again a true ladder and cut the list to 20 tricks.
This has not yet been decided.
You can see those tricks here: http://www.ta0.com/tricks/sport-division/sports_division.html
Except the year Eli competed, being able to do 10 tricks of the list was enough to make you competitive.

yes Yes YES!!!  What great news from Shootist!!!  Yesterday was Christmas in July and I celebrated by dreaming of Christmas in August.  Now that we know that car load of top energy is coming our way LOOK OUT.  Things are coming together quite nicely for nationals in the Burg.

One other interesting bit.  The newspaper just had a picture of the burying of the time capsule.  It is now in the ground at the outdoor Riverfront park where we will be on Saturday evening.  And every time I walk by the spot where it is buried I get a big smile because we have a Toycrafter peg top in there!!!

I got a nice phone call yesterday.  It seems that Mark Hayward will be doing something in Chicago on the 24th.  He needs to be in Montgomery, Alabama on the 26th.  Because he misses all of us, he is going to try to swing by Miamisburg late on the 24th and hang out until the nationals are over around 4pm.  Yippee!!!  Things are looking better all the time.

It's looking better and better! It's going to be a fantastic crowd!  8)

But with Shanghai before (leaving this Monday!!!) I have been remiss in my preparations for Miamisburg. I haven't reserved a place to stay: does anybody need a roommate?

Just got another amazing call.  This one was from Dick Stohr.  He says he doesn't want to miss out on all the action.  He and Bev are also going to be coming to Miamisburg.  Wow!!!

My long term dream was to have a place where a lot of people could stay, but some things have changed that for now.....like a baby.  Not mine!!!  The mom was in a little sis program with my wife and needed a place to stay.  The hotel is full but I hope one day it can be open again.

It is now the first day of August and I have an idea/challenge.  I found an old ripstick (two wheeled skateboard) in the garage.  I would like to try to ride that and do some top tricks to open up the national competition.  That is my challenge and I hope others will take the opportunity to just have fun and do a freestyle knowing they will not be last (as I will not be able to score much on that ripstick).  I would love to see 6-8 competitors or more.

It is a very short walk to St. Jacobs and to the park.  It would be fun to fill this charming B&B with top spinners.

Thank you so much for that commitment, Kirk.  That means a lot.  It gives us a big push forward on having more than three competing at nationals (sadly, a recent trend).

Oh, and don't worry about where you are on your freestyle right now.  You are way way way ahead of me.  I can now mount my ripstick again (it has been years) and can go 10-15 feet in a straight line....which is pretty useless on a stage.  I need to turn and that is just starting to happen again.  I still have yet to try a top on it.  So, this is my challenge for anyone else who wants to try.......you are way ahead of me, but I have 23 days to practice.

Jim Neff?!!?!?!?

tkunkel....that is great news for us!  Thanks for making the commitment to freestyle.  I wonder what the record is for the most freestyle competitors at nationals?

For music, would it be possible for people to have their music on a cd?

I finally threw a boomerang and caught it on my ripstick....but then I immediately fell off.  It is very humbling.  I have a long away to go but I have 16 days and I like the challenge.  Jim Neff told me he would also like to freestyle.

One more thing.  We are working on trying to have boxes of Toycrafter tops and items here for people to rummage through.  This seems pretty exciting to me!!!

I made it back from Rochester.  It is pretty late but all went well.  The mini-van I rented was packed tight with 50 some boxes and bags of tops from the Toycrafter.  It looks like people coming to Miamisburg this year will have lots of things to check out.  I was hoping that this was half of Don's collection but the other guys think it might just be a third or so!!!

There are some really wonderful items in the packages that went to Miamisburg yesterday from Don's collection. Many antique and vintage items all boxed up and ready for new homes. Mailman and I are planning to bring a second shipment with us when we travel to the festival. It should be a pretty impressive display.

In recent years, butterfingers and I have arrived on Friday afternoon at the University of Cincinnati to enjoy the tour of the facilities with John Marcus, and see how he produces his amazing spin tops.

I've not heard specifically that this is the plan this year, but I imagine it will be.  If you have never done the tour (and, even if you have), it's a "must do".  John only sells his tops in person, and that's an opportunity you won't want to miss.

Has anyone heard from John about this for this year?

I have been unpacking some of Don's odds and ends and setting up the displays in my office.  It is pretty cool to walk in there and be hit with a wall of tops.  One display is a board of 18 Duncan bearing  kings.  Another is a board of 24 Imperials.  These will be easy to move into our fellowship hall to add color for our fest.

The weather on my phone just came up for the 25th and it says clear with a high of 81.  Looking good so far!!!

It has been a good day as I walk around town giving out finger spinners and talk about the upcoming festival.  I have been showing off one of our special Miamisburg tops with stars made by Don.  I hope he is reading this because everyone is super impressed with it.  I have enough for forum members who attend and a few more for special guests......like the mayor.

Crazy busy at work. Then injured my hand last Saturday.  Xrays show it not broken, but it is too swollen to throw all but the smallest tops.  Then I got the flu. Also sorry to hear about Kirk's struggles.  Hope you are doing better and have a good week before the Burg fest.

One week to go and the weather is nice and warm today.  Lots of sweat as I work out in the yard.  It looks to be a few degrees cooler next Saturday with no chance of rain (right now) but lots of rain headed this way on Sunday.  I am headed over to the church to set up some more decorations for the big day.

I will be around all day (starting at 6:00 am. to be reasonable) on Friday and Sunday to greet visitors to the University of Cincinnati for a review of top related things here.  As always, people are traveling various distances and have various arrival times (and delays) and departure times so there never is any real schedule for the "tour" especially on Friday.  Thus you should invite yourself and if possible give us a clue of your anticipated arrival time.  The gathering has sort of a free wheeling approach based on interests and if you miss something, it can be easily revisited.  I babble a lot and your questions and interests can help give the time spent here some real direction and purpose.

For the new visitors, here are a few forum threads discussing some of the stuff that can be reviewed during a visit to UC

For mapping purposes the street address for the physics department at the University of Cincinnati is
345 Clifton Court
Cincinnati  OH 45221

Student move-in is this week so metered street parking may be sparse (particularly on Friday) but typically cash parking ($10 ouch) in the garage at the end of Clifton Court is available.

PS.  Note that UC 's email filters seem to quarantine messages originating from the forum, so for visit planing if you want to contact me please email from outside the forum to John.Markus[{at}]uc.edu making the appropriate substitution with @.

Plans have been confirmed regarding a 2nd van full of treasures from Don Olney's shop in Rochester. We will be putting everything into the van on Thursday night and driving out on Friday. Mr. Olney has promised a full load - and this is in addition to the van full of top related items already in Miamisburg from Pastor Mike's recent trip to the shop. This promises to be a pretty impressive display of tops and top related items.

Just had a good top lunch with John Buechele.  He met me at the church so he saw what I had out in my office from the Don Olney collection.  Whew!  I cannot believe more is coming.

Yesterday I met with the Mayor and gave him some of Don's festival tops in honor of Miamisburg's 200th.  He was pleased and gave it a spin.  "It really spins a long time" he said.  Yep, good high quality from the Toycrafter.

I also ran errands yesterday for the fest.....proof of insurance, $25 dollar park fee and official reservation with the city.  In the evening I met with a Girl Scout group and a Boy Scout troop.

Today, after John and I had lunch we went to Elder-Beerman and their final sale.  We believe we got a nice piece for some top sharp shooting practice.  50% off but 100% fun for us!!!

It was cool last night (all the way down to the 50's) and cool today but warming up after this and headed to the 90's next week.  Saturday has been steady in the forecast with rain and a high of 83.  We will have plenty of room inside to keep spinning all day if we get hit by the wet stuff.

I am still going through tops from the first shipment.  It continues to be mind boggling.  It must have been over whelming for Don Olney to consider this process.  We are doing him a big favor by working on them.  I hope everyone takes some home (and more than just some).  If everyone takes a box full, what I have in the office will only go down half!!!  Kirk, you will want more than a box for your flock of top spinners.

I am not sure what plans people have for Friday night but I hear that a few will be coming in early and not going to johnm's place until Sunday.  If any want to come to the church and spend some time with several thousand tops, John Buechele and will be there....probably from 5pm on.

Safe travels and I look forward to seeing lots of people very soon.  I am headed to Bullwinkle's to make sure there is space for us there on Saturday evening.

Wow!!!  Sounds to me like there will be two substantial top events going on Friday......one in the amazing physics department at the University of Cincinnati and another in historic Albrecht Hall (1860) at St. Jacob Lutheran Church in Miamisburg.  Thanks for the quick responses.

I have not moved any of Don's tops into the hall yet, but I have been hauling a lot of other memorabilia and displays and top related items.  It should be a very top friendly atmosphere for Saturday.  Weather Update: one site says there is a possibility of rain from 10am until 1pm on Saturday.

I finally got caught up on the thread and am excited for all of the people coming  :)

I will be there taking lots of pics as usual and some vid as well.  It will be so much fun with all of the talents in one place.

The pics and vids will be posted as usual at   http://www.miamisburg.org/tops.htm
Plus there are pics and vids going back to 2005 when Mike brought me on board :)

Also, the pics and vids will be placed on the Miamisburg Bicentennial page:  http://www.miamisburg.org/miamisburg_bicentennial.htm

Look forward to seeing you all  8)

Gee, Mike, you really know how to make a guy who can't attend wish he could. Would love to meet everyone face to face and get more throwing top lessons from the maestros. I'm sure you'll all have a blast.

This festival will be the biggest gathering of forum members ever!   8) 8) 8)

I'm very glad we started ITSA or we wouldn't be able to have an official contest separate from the yo-yo contests.

PS: I have the feeling that I promised somebody that I was going to bring something to Miamisburg, but I cannot recall what. I do recall that I need to bring Renee the Trip-L-Top instructions sheet. What else? If I have promised you something, please remind me by pm tonight!

So excited to hear of this turnout.  What is the record for freestylers at nationals?  It seems like that is a good team goal for us.

I have been shaking the bushes and walking the streets of the Burg to let people know what is going on this weekend.  It has paid off with the discovery of 75 year old Helen Pemberton.  Her maiden name was Yancigay (Yugoslavian).  She was a top spinning winner in 1951 in New York City and was even on TV.  I will start a separate thread about her so we can talk specifically about her and do some research.

Sorry Jeremy.  It will be special when you can join us.  Jorge, I love that stat about the biggest forum face to face ever.  Jay, thanks for your help and your links.  Dick, I remember that night well.  The top battles were electric and the sky was electric also with all the lightning.  The rain was coming down and starting to gather around the sound system.  I was worried about getting electrocuted but that would have made for a heck of a story and our top event might have become the Mike Hout memorial tournament.

My wife says she can get a good deal on a giant sub for everyone so we can be together longer and not leave our equipment.  We could also get a case of water and some drinks.  How does that sound for everyone?  And if anyone wants to do otherwise, we have Subway close and the Hamburger Wagon (since 1913).

Never done it before either, but it looks like you swipe right, select “live” and go to town.  After you finish your video it’s available for 24 hours, I don’t think you can archive it.  If you plan on doing it let us know your Instagram handle so we can watch.  Ben McPhee was taking all sorts of videos at the world yoyo contest.  It was fun to see people practicing, or competing, or hanging out.

We would love to see you in Miamisburg, Jon Gates.  I am taking a pause in the action while bad tops are getting whipped for their poor behavior.

It has been quite a hectic day.  I was working on the staging area and the sign when I happened to see our California crew in the parking lot!!!  How great to hear their kind reviews of our area.  They helped me get the sign up and then we began the long process of hauling Don's tops from my office to the fellowship hall.  People kept coming in and I lost track of who came when.  Mailman and Butterfingers arrived with another shipment of Don's tops and the hall was overflowing.  So many neat things to see and try.  So many good memories.

Somebody asked me when it gets dark around these parts and in a short time I found out why.  Such beautiful 3D glowing tops and kongzhus.  Now we are talking about dinner as tummies are rumbling.  Mark Hayward is coming at 11:00.

Poor Mark!  Construction is slowing him down but that gives me a moment to reflect on a hectic but very special evening.  By the way, I never could have dreamed we would ever have a Friday night like that.  After Jose, Tom and Rebecca came by, I remember meeting softspin.  Jim Neff came strolling in the buildings and then there were the Olivers, Dale and Val.  Renee came and seemed to be smiling all night.  I saw Joe Mauk coming up the sidewalk and was able to give him a warm Miamisburg welcome (what a memory as he asked where is the stump).  Kirk and Rachel made it from Georgia.  The Hickersons are here from Alabama.  John Buechele drove all the way from Oakwood.  What is that?  Nine miles?  I met Dick and Beverly outside with a group spinning Autograph.  I am 18 and now Mark has arrived to bring us to 19.  I hope I did not miss anyone.

After we went to Ron's to get pizza there is the slight chance I remembered someone else.  It happened when he was talking about a couple of pieces of pizza.  Everyone smirked about it and even Ta0 says it is a good joke.  So I have come up with 20 names so far.  Who else did I miss?  I will dream about it and share more top adventures tomorrow.

He counted me at the end but he missed Owen even though we had more than two pietces of pitzza together last night and his RV is parked outside the church.
If think we should also count Dawn, even though she inspected the huge display of tops without saying a thing. ;D
We will be able to take a wonderful group photo of top spinners today, after John Markus and perhaps others join the fun.:)

I already took photos with Figaro of these new inductees to the Figaro Gallery of Top Players:

Butterfingers
Maiman

Ha ha!!!  Thanks.  I knew I would miss some but I wanted to try so others could get a feel for who is here.  I mentioned mailman and butterfingers in one of my previous posts and helped them unload their car but still managed to leave them off the list.  Owen was one of the last guys I saw last night and still found a way to miss him.  Sorry guys. I can always blame it on getting older!!!

On the weather front, my phone says the percentage has gone down to 30 percent at one and two.  The bad news is it now also says 30 percent chance at 5 and 6, when we are to head to the park.  Well, we will soon see.

Many thanks to all who have taken time out to gather this weekend.  It is really special to have everyone together.  Sorry again for missing Owen and butterfingers and mailman (and my wife-even though she is a forum member!!!).

We are now at Bullwinkle's and winding down after a big day.  We survived one of the largest top collections in the world.  We survived one of the biggest national championships ever (10 players!!!).  We survived lots of thunder and lightning in the park.  The stories go on and on.  I look forward to hearing more of them.  I missed so much running around.

I'm already looking forward to next year!

Many thanks to Pastor Mike for all the hard work he puts in behind the scenes making sure the festival goes off without a hitch. Thanks to Steve (Softspin) for the help replacing bearings in my ailing Hornet.  And thanks, too, to all the other top spinners in attendance for the encouragement and pointers, so willingly offered.

I am off today to church then to see John Ms place in Cincinnati.  It will make a great close to the weekend.

I'm back to Rochester after the drive from Miamisburg. What a great weekend! Thanks to Pastor Mike for all the hard work that went into planning / organizing / running this get together for so many years. I am over the top excited to have a special new Watts' top (thank you Pastor Mike for making it available) as well as a top from Tao himself (an unexpected, wonderful gift)! I am a lucky boy for sure!
I met Renee, Steve, Jose, Rebecca and Tom for the first time. I can now pronounce Buechele, too! John Marcus outdid himself this year and produced a stunning array of HDPE tops - this was the first year I didn't bring one home as I picked up a couple crowns from Relampago as well as some items from the Don Olney summer collection the Watts top I mentioned already.
At the tender age of 52 I am proud to announce that I qualified for the 16 trick patch and survived Val Oliver's strict judging with minimal psychological scarring. I traveled with Mailman (as usual) and this was our 4th trip! Thank you to everyone who gave me advice on Sun's and Orbits over the weekend. My homework for next year will be the 24 trick patch and I hope to have Sun's and Obits figured out...I might even be able to snap start. We'll see.
...and I had my picture taken with the mighty Figaro!
It was great being a part of the festival again this year.

Here are the vids from the 2018 Spin Top Freestyle National Championships :)

They are mostly here.  Most of them were flagged for copyrighted music.  That is not normally a problem, and I took care of it.  There were a few that were banned... can you say Beatles music.  lol  Once again, I took care of that problem... or it is being taken care of.  I had to strip the music out of those routines.  They are processing or should be completed sometime soon.  Let me know if you do not see your routine and I will check on it.

With all that being said, Enjoy:

The last group of vids are what I am calling - The 2018 Miamisburg Tops - After Dark

These are vids from Bullwinkles and at the church having some late night fun.

These vids are all Unlisted.  That simply means they can not be found in a search, but can still be shared if someone has the link.  I thought these were better to be shared with just the Top family and who you all want to personally share with.  I would not post them to any open area.  Then again, I leave it up to you all.  I was just recording :)

One final bit of info for now.

I will incorporate this info in the website later this week.

http://www.miamisburg.org/tops.htm

I did not want to make everyone wait until I was finished, like normal.

Once again, it was so much fun.  Now it is time to start editing at least 100 pics for tonight

Hope you all had and have safe journeys home.  See you next year or the next time you spin into town :)

8)

Monday - Over 600 pics posted.  There are still 200+ to go.  I anticipate everything being online by Tue or Wed.  The website will be updated after I am finished with all of the editing and uploading, then it will only take a single click to reach everything  :)  Glad everyone is enjoying the pics and vids.  :)

We made it through church services.  Many thanks to the full pew and a half of top spinners participating in the service.

I got some lunch and some napping and headed back to the church to try to condense the top collection.  I actually cleared off several tables and put them away so the place looks like it is under a bit of control.  Eight tables to go!

Do I count 23 top spinners on the group photo? And Jay who was behind the camera. Plus Beverly and Dawn make it a a reunion of 26 spininning friends. Plus thousand of tops from Don's collection. Plus the Colombian tops donated by Larry. Plus the local kids and families. Wow!

It feels like a coming of age for the forum. And also for ITSA for certifying a contest separate from the yo-yo contests. Thanks everybody for the fun and memories and specially Mike and Dawn for making it possible.

As you can see on Jay's late night videos, we tried new games, like throwing boomerangs over a string high up into a target. And we had the most elaborate target ever, with multiple adjustable levels (and a pretty face):

We had top battles, of course, but relatively mild ones (no tops or people were hurt).
Talking about top battles, Rachel, Rick, Mike and I had a very late dinner at Arby's and brought a fancy battling top game. Mike was the winner when they closed at 11 PM:

Mike's congregation probably expects a very unusual mass the day after the festival, including many references to tops and out of town people demonstrating top tricks. But Jim spinning a toilet seat at the end of a pole must have surprise them.

I'm at the Dayton airport. I shouldn't have gone back to the church today: my bag got even more stuffed and the trip more expensive.  ::)

The tour of John's lab was about 3 hours long and although it was my third time,  I learned new things.

Only doing the tour you can appreciate how much work goes into one of his tops. Thank you John!

johnm is very amazing and I am quite honored to call him my friend.  He is the quiet but big force behind the Burg fest.

I am sitting in our hall where just a short time ago so much activity occurred.  It is quiet now but the energy with all the top spinners was fantastic.  Also, I have been slowly organizing Don's collection and taking down tables.  It feels good to be down to five tables.  At one point there were 13 tables packed full with his collection.  I had to make sure there was enough room for our exercise class which meets this evening.

Hope everyone made it home safely!!!

Just back from Ohio. WOW What a weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to all but a very special THANKS to Mike for all he does  to make it happen.
It was really good to put faces with names and handles on the board.
Hope everyone else traveled as safe as we did. Good to be home, but even better to have been there!

Hey Don!  Your tops had a great weekend.  They were out of their boxes and spinning all over the place.  They not only were out to play but they also were cleaned up a bit.  How nice to have that good old Rochester earth here in Miamisburg.  There were so many kind top spinners here and they all went around visiting your little friends.  Some liked your tops so much that they adopted them and now they are in places like New York, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Wisconsin, California and even the Phillipines.

I have slowly been trying to find ways to gather them together in groups so they might be easier to find.  I really like the clear tubs that are a step down from the large size.  That way they can be seen through the sides and one can also dump the box out on a table fairly easily.  There are four full boxes of those loose tops right now.  Peg tops still in wrappers that can be used to teach others how to throw are in one big cardboard box.  Plastic toy top items are in another big box and I can get to them to make more top friends.  There is one large box of optic tops and several boxes of yogo strings.  I plan on putting all the games in clear long shoe containers that are designed to fit under the bed but I will fit them out in the hall of fame to keep my wife happy.  The pump tops will be boxed up today and I have friends who want them and will love them.  Gyroscopes are in one place.  Dreidels are in another place.  I need new clear containers for Japanese tops, historic tops and other odds and ends that I am searching through.  And, of course, there are three big boxes of giant wood flipovers with launchers from Switzerland.  So far, that is my first major report on your happy little friends.

With Don's collection at the Church, we didn't do the traditional visit to the Hall of Fame. But at the insistance of Mike I donated the cap (with some missing material) that I used in my freestyle in Tokyo. It will join Matt Ritter's cap  :D Austen also made a donation to the HOF. Any guesses?

I was nervous about those videos showing up.  Thanks for keeping them short!!!

Today's report is that the last table has been taken down in the hall and most everything is back to normal there (except for a few items on bulletin boards, the top Christmas tree and the multi-level top target).  My car is packed and ready for the Hall of Fame.  My office is also quite packed but also slightly functional.  I am hoping for more good moving tonight and tomorrow.  I think most of the pressure is off of me now and I can move these last few things in my office bit by bit.

Thanks to everyone who was involved in putting on the festival, especially Mike, who worked very hard to make this event happen.  The top collection was amazing and really fun to look at and it was awesome to take a couple souvenirs home.  We had a really good time with all the top throwers and met some amazing people.  Look forward to seeing everyone again.

Thanks to Jim for helping me learn to juggle and Eli for teaching me how to throw the flat disc top (I forget what this is called).  I liked the flat top so much that I picked up one from John M, who gave us an amazing tour of his top making operation.  Thanks for the tour John.

I just finished updating the website, so everything is more easy to access.  All links are in one place: Pics on Facebook & Flickr, Vids on YouTube.  The link for the After Dark Vids is only available on this forum and is unlisted.

The rest of it is ready to enjoy and share  8)

Our family had a Great Time at Miamisburg Whirl Top Festival and Nationals. We saw our Spin Top Friends Old and New and had fun Spinning Tops with them. The Don Olney Spin Top Collection was nice and fun to see.

I finally was able to take Twister and complete Suns. What a workout!!!!.

Thanks to Mike Hout for all your Hard Work for this event.  Thanks, JohnM for having my family at UC and for all your Hospitality and Hard Work making HDPE Tops. We enjoy throwing them.

Jay the photos are Great  Thanks

Looking forward to 2019 Miamisburg and Worlds.  Hope to See Everybody There.

So...I am a banjo player who plays old time string band music. Most of it involves murders, train wrecks, dogs and rodents. Anyway, I have to work with what the world gives me. I recorded this after juggling club this afternoon (in my yard) on my Tascam portable player. It's the first unedited take and I put some of the Miamisburg pics with it to make a simple slideshow. It's most likely the first folk song ever written about a top spinner. BTW, Jose is also a banjo player and I figured that I owed him a song given our intersecting hobbies. Proceed at your own risk: Once listened to, the song cannot be unheard. Based loosely on a song called 'Ruben's Train'. Congrats, Jose!

- I was limited to only several types of attachments for the file and had to use a ZIP file format. I guess that didn't work so well.
- I just uploaded the slideshow (my first video!) to YouTube.

It was a tough ride in the heat, but we finished the big Holiday at Home parade this morning.  I made it on my six foot unicycle without a fall but got dizzy a couple times after the ride.  Maybe that is a warning for this 65 year old.  We cooled off with a GR8 Chipotle lunch then headed home for a nap.  When I woke up and checked the forum I was thrilled to see this video.  So much fun.  My only regret is that I can only play along with the recorded music and not be live with the banjo player picking in G.  Fine work butterfingers.  We need to jam!!!

The judges said that the Nationals placements would be posted. (and I suppose scores)  I hope to continue to improve. In a perfect world we could get judges comments after the event, but I know that they are all quite busy.

Thanks, Kirk.  It was a labor of love......but I'm not sure how much love I can give on a yearly basis.  With next year's world's so close in Cleveland it would make sense to have nationals in another state.  Two trips to Ohio in the same month seems to be asking a lot of people who are participating.  On the other hand, I would be open to talking about the 2020 nationals or 2021.

Finally, I got the last of the top spinning items out of our fellowship hall.  The last two things were the banner and the spin top Christmas tree.  The banner came down easily enough and is now back to it's winter home in the hall of fame.  The Christmas spin tree was a bit of a different challenge.  I finally walked it home on a little red wagon and was only losing a top here or there from the tree.  But just before I got to my house two Mormon missionaries spotted me and headed my way.  I rushed over the last few steps trying to avoid them and paid a heavy price.  Of the 42 tops on the tree, 26 fell off!!!  Well, at least the tree is safe and sound in its new home and I have a few months to get the tops on it before the big holiday season.

Yes, Mike, that was a big labor of love you gifted us with. Thank you very much. Don't worry, we are now considering other venues for nats next year. More than likely it will be together with yo-yo nats (looks like either Philadelphia or Chicago again). Or perhaps a juggling convention.

The image of you pushing the "spintop Christmas tree" trying to get away from Mormon missionaries and the tops falling, is hilarious!  ;D

He he!!!  Thanks for your humor, butterfingers.  Thanks, also, to ta0 for that picture of the top tree.  I was hoping someone got an image of it.  After all, that Saturday was Christmas in August.

Also glad you enjoyed my Mormon missionary story.  The final piece to the tale were their odd looks and sideway glances to each other when I was explaining about our big spinning weekend and the top tree.  I don't think they ever got it, but that is too bad for them.  They missed out on something special.  Ah......how many in the world do not understand our whirled?

I got the last of the empty boxes out of my office.  Can you believe there were 19 of them?  That was a lot of condensing and trading and buying.  I got the best of the trading with some chin hair from Austen for a top.

By the way, 2021 is the 200th anniversary of this congregation.  Nationals at St. Jacob would be a mighty nice touch to a special year.  If I am still around, we could once again use the hall for free.
