Title: Spintop videos by Kuma Films
Post by: Malushi on April 06, 2016, 02:44:44 PM
Hi spinners! I saw a neat spintop video today and wanted to share it with you all.

This video was produced by Kuma Films - they are experts at producing high quality videos that show off unique skills and activities.

Here is their video on Taiwanese "spintop snipers": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLYazynm_1M

If you enjoy that video, check out some other videos on the Kuma Films channel. They did a video with Takeshi last year and it was very entertaining! His ability to perform tricks with tops and other skill toys at the same time is awe inspiring.

Link to Takeshi's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWlt2un4q9s

I really like the precision top tricks, and Takeshi is well, Takeshi.

Thanks for posting!

I sent them pictures of how to improve the top. Seems like they are fine just doing spinners, and long wire walkers. I took one of there tops and put a black walnut crown on it - threw it on long line and it's a fantastic trick and fighter top.

Wow!  8) We had discussed Takeshi's video before and we had seen many Taiwanese target videos so I did not watch the first video until now. But it is so good!!
Thanks for posting it. I look forward to the behind the scenes version they said it is coming soon.

Hey, Jack, did you see the lamp shade top at 0:45!  >:D

I think they're somehow controlling the spin top right before it leaves the string when it is just right on top of the target! They can surely throw very precisely, but for some reason I doubt they could achieve what they did with just throwing (ex. land on a bottle cap, or inside a small rubber band). They have to be making corrections after the top leaves their hand somehow, especially when it flies near the target.

Here is a Taiwanese website that teaches how to target throw a top: http://163.17.220.4/whipping-top/materials.htm

One important thing they stress is that the string must be just as long as the distance between you and the target (you can see it in the video too). I presume that it makes it easier to control even after the top leaves your hand... They never specifically say anything about controlling the top after the toss though, so I don't know. Maybe the feeling comes with practice.

P.S. I'm planning to translate the entire site in the near future when/if I get the owner's permission :).

I agree with you Alan: they must be able to make adjustments by pulling the string at the end. Even if that is the case, shooting at the rubber washer would be very difficult and I cannot believe that they are successful most of the time.

Here is a Taiwanese website that teaches how to target throw a top: http://163.17.220.4/whipping-top/materials.htm
Thanks! I looked a little bit around the website you indicated: there are a lot of pages with instructions! Great!

For example, target throwing while skipping a rope sounds challenging:

I think google translation says that both ropes get tangled after the throw  :P

I need to find some of these!:

Yea, along with video demonstrations too. Quite neat :).

I think google translation says that both ropes get tangled after the throw

Google didn't get it quite right ;D, it says first you have to pull back half of the the string with your left hand, then the next half with your right hand very quickly, or the ropes would tangle.
This page (same website): http://163.17.220.4/whipping-top/skill/originality/top-hoop.htm has a rather low quality and loud video of the school team doing the trick.

Jack,
It may take months for me to translate a site that big, so don't get too excited just yet xD.

Mm, the video link appears on the preview but not on the message. I need to look into that.

Pretty amazing that they have time to throw and retrieve the rope between jumps.

What I found most interesting about the Spintop Snipers video was their throwing technique seems quite different from all other spin top videos I've seen to date, which admittedly is only a couple dozen as I've only just been bitten by the spin top bug.

The Snipers seem to throw with the top tip pointing down in their hand, but then throw with their palm facing the ground instead of perpendicular to the ground.  From what I can tell in the video, the top stays fairly horizontal until the very end when they give a slight tug back, which pops it to vertical.  Also, I think and want to check again with another viewing, they have the string coming off the back of the top rather than coming around the front when they are holding it in their hand.

Do others on this board throw this way?

~Dan

EDIT: Also, slowing the video down ('<' key), it appears their wrapping starts at the tip.  When the top pops off, the string is coming off last at the tip, not at the crown.

Welcome Dan!

The wrap-from-the-tip is an alternative way of wrapping that is used when you don't have a crown to use as an anchor. It works but it is more prone to tangles.
On the video they wrap in the same direction that we do and hold the top basically the same way, only that they twist the wrist so the tip points to the left (inside) instead of pointing up. Then they throw bowling style. They do this because the top will only flip a quarter turn with the string they are using. We can do the same with our tops if we use a slightly longer or thicker string: the closer the wrap ends from the center of mass, the less does the top flip.

And thank you!

Thank you so much for that detailed explanation.  I received my first top yesterday, an Energia/YYF Short Circuit and threw until my fingers were raw from wrapping the string.  Was experimenting with minute changes to my grip and release to try to determine what was doing what, so I was particularly interested in understanding what I was seeing in the video.

Going to enjoy this hobby!

Do you know where can I find those spintops in Europe?

if you get one from spingear , opt for the larger one
in Marines festival we have hosted Taiwan some years ago
Mr liuyung ho from Dazi  has taught us the throw and each year we take the taiwan tops and play with 6 m ropes
it's not too difficult to target a frisbee on the floor, even a frisbee on a chair
but higher than 1m it's really challenging

if you have a teletransportation device you could come to the next Marines festival
in Jan/Feb 2019 : we have plenty of taiwan tops to try and play

Well I got my Taiwanese spintop made in Greece by Kostas (thanks for the contact guys!).

It ended being more expensive than I expected... 80€ + shipping :-\

Anyway the top is super beautifull !!

I don't know if it's me or the rope but winding it is a nightmare!!

I had to throw it many time till I find the correct length but then I noticed that the rope is stretching!!

What is the key? The point where the rope ends winding... The number of turns of the rope around the top???

I'm really suffering ...

Here you have a picture of the spintop and the rope... It slides one out of three times while winding.  :'( :'( :'(

Any advice throwing/winding/rope upgrading? please!

It looks like synthetic string.  Try cotton.

Also, try wrapping toward the end of the tip a couple of rounds, then back up the top.

Cotton and... thickness?? Anything else??
In general, thicker and tighter cord will make the wrap more stable.

What is the key? The point where the rope ends winding... The number of turns of the rope around the top???
The number of turns doesn't matter. What matters is the height where the winding ends. Thicker = shorter, thinner = longer string

Great to know!!!!

Regarding the string..is any kind os string is recomended?? A picture would help very much (If is just a regular spintop string but thicker I have some)

I cannot appreciate the kind os rope in this picture...

I would try rope 1/8 polypro camo cord. I've had fun with this cord. I have done the tricks and set a couple of World records. HITTING A TARGET AT 25 FEET. THROWING A SPINNER AT 32 FEET. I buy it on ebay. I cut the length then wash it in warm water mixed with PALMOLIVE ORIGINAL dish soap.

Is the video above the one you mentioned??

About the string do you mean paracord in camo colour, right?

Damn!!! I just bought a roll of cotton twisted string this morning!!

And last... Could you tell us more about the records???

Depending how big it is. you should retwist it with a drill... the original direction isn't that important... Search for chris neff video on how to turn string ( or dylan's one )...
I have plan to make one at some point...

We will see...
Cheers,
