Title: Tornado Top - The Top That Could Spin Forever
Post by: Dalton Bissell on January 10, 2016, 12:16:11 AM
Hello Everyone,

I would like to share with you my Tornado Top. Tornado Top is the 3D printed, wind powered, spinning top designed to work like a turbine... as long as you blow on it every few minutes it will never stop! There's nothing quite like it any where else. Blowing through a straw is more than enough power to get this top roaring with speed. It's incredibly fun and easy to do. Even a bad spin will level out as it accelerates. So what are you waiting for? Check out the video, then give it a try!

Welcome to the forum, Dalton!
You have quite a few pretty and unusual tops on your Shapeways shop!
Any special reason for choosing stainless steel for the ebay offering?
I saw on your comments there that you could get it to spin 2:30 minutes after revving it up by blowing for a while. Was that the stainless steel version?

As Jim said, the concept of a blow top is not new. But if you can keep it spinning for more than 7 hours, 14 seconds, you could claim the Guinness World Record for duration (established by whipping a top) and that would be a good marketing thing.

Thank you both for the warm welcome!

I saw a few other designs of "blowing tops" recently too, some here on the forum and one on kickstarter too. For me, this was a new idea, which lead to the unique design. I'm glad I didn't see someone else's design before discovering for myself that it could be done, I laughed like a little kid when it worked. Honestly my passion for tops is rather fresh still, I never had a good top before now and its addicting. I can't wait to see what I make after a few years of enjoying designing them. I'm certain that you guy's are about to teach me a lot about spinning tops.

I chose to offer the stainless steel version on ebay because its the only one I've actually got in person, so I have video of it and real photo's. Which means yes, the one that spun for 2:30 was the stainless steel "nickel plated". It's also my first time selling on ebay, it's been interesting and rewarding. My shapeways shop has been rather successful with these tops, there's something like 22 of them in existence, sadly I have only gotten to see mine because they are drop shipped straight to the customer. Some lucky fella ordered some very nice ones from my shapeways shop recently, Gold Plated and Rhodium Plated. I asked him to send some pictures but I know it's just about time to re-invest and buy some nice ones of my own.

Now... Guinness world book. I'm obsessed already, I practice haha. I did quite a bit of research on the record already and I don't see any reason I can't break it with the blow top idea. That is as long as I don't hyperventilate and pass out, which is why we practice and have a partner present (please no one hurt themselves by blowing too much, it can happen). So far I have spun the top for 2 hours without stopping. I spun it on a small cosmetics mirror, I can hold it in my hand and spin it with no tools, just blowing from my lips, while watching T.V. or whatever else only requires 2 minutes of attention. Do you think it follows the rules if I lift up the mirror? I'll ask someone at guinness to make sure of all the rules and such before I do a real attempt.

That will not be a problem. The previous record with the Topnosis top was achieved by manipulating the dish under the top.

Thanks for the complement Earl of Whirl. These wind powered tops are a blast, I have 3 of them on my living room table and some one's always fiddling with one. Better than T.V. all day. I have one Tornado Top in steel and one in Bronze, the Bronze one rings like a bell when it first hits the table. People have a hard time letting it spin till it falls, they just snatch it back up over and over. So I agree, it's a fun thing to have around for people to try.

Had these prototypes machined for me probably 25 years ago?  I had intended to get rich by selling them to Mac Donalds and kids could play with them with the straws already available there?  The straw goes over the stem and blow!  The one without a stem did not work very well at all - that is what prototypes are for after all.  I planned to provide paper discs with color mixing graphics, or plain ones for the kids to color themselves .... paper discs fit the upper two tops.  Dropped the idea when I realized that kids would probably have a lot more fun by spraying milk around the table with them - straws with milk or soda in them, and a small turbine --- what could go wrong?

Ha! That is called unforeseen field conditions! Parents and staff might have hate it, but the kids would have love it! ;D

That's hilarious, milk flying everywhere. Mine gets going at a speed that I would consider dangerously fast, so another thing to think about is keeping all your edges rounded.I made one prototype recently that smacked my finger so damn hard I thought I was cut. I wasn't. The Tornado Top and Turbine Top both have nice rounded edges so they don't bite you when you get impatient and try to grab it.

Hello everyone,

I've got an update on the Tornado top here. The new Tornado Top XL just arrived in Green Strong and Flexible (an sls nylon that is dyed green). This thing is awesome and huge! It took a little practice to figure out just where to blow but it certainly does accelerate. It spins good in my hand and I am having lots of fun with it so far. I can't wait to print another one of my designs as an XL top.

Did anybody else ever get any of these?  Did anyone else ever get a chance to try them?  I am wondering if those prototypes from Don are in my garage?
