Title: New hi-performance tops
Post by: ta0 on February 17, 2013, 01:07:43 PM: I just got this picture of new hi-tech spintops:

I am told that the center one with aluminum body will not be released to the public at this time, but the all-delrin ones will be for sale in just a few weeks. In fact, I will receive one this week to review :) They weigh 88 grams, use C-size yo-yo bearings and can also take one-way bearings. I expect the price to be around $100.

Any guesses who is making these tops?

I put "currently" to trick somebody into saying YYF, but no, it is not them. This yo-yo company has never made spintops.
Any other guesses?

??? Crucial ? Some time ago they had mentioned a possible Delrin Spin Top project.

paul from crucial told me a while back that he was going to design a spintop in the future, it could be his.

Crucial and Werrd were very good guesses, as they have promised tops. But, none of them made those tops.

Boyd Seth used to compete in tops sponsored by Caribou Lodge and at one time told me they were planning a signature top for him. But no, none of them made these tops.

Another possible company would have been Ethernal Throw. At nats last year Free said he would like to come out with a top after his yo-yos got some traction.

We have a winner! Chico Yo-Yo Company (CYYC) is behind these tops. The top was designed by Thad Winzenz and Richy.
I have never seen Thad throw a top but it seems he is a decent player.
I bet one of those aluminum body tops will end up in the National Yo-Yo Museum ;)

and plays real well but is very heavy on the hand.
We only made 6 of them because if you dont try
you will will never know.

at 133grams it's just 4 grams more than a Quicksilver= we can handle the throw and for the catch " it's all in the knees" ;)

Post by: ta0 on February 18, 2013, 02:08:42 PM: I like heavy tops for fixed tip play (my HPs with caps are 100+ grams) but not so much for bearing play. So I would want the aluminum one if the tip can be fixed.

Actually, these will not be the first Chico brand spinning tops. The old Royal Chico company from NY sold several tops in the 50s and 60s, including the Trom.Po, Astrotop and Chiquito.
