Title: Nine ball in the corner pocket......
Post by: Eric on November 14, 2010, 03:52:28 PM
Even though this started as a yo-yo thing, some of you may remember that at Worlds 2009 in the Iron Mod contest the "secret ingredient" (a part or type of material that the contestants must incorporate into their yo-yo creations) was Pool/Billiard Balls.  The Pool Balls were provided by Hans and Benny from YoYoFactory, and Hans showed up with a partially finished top in three sections: Maple crown, Pool Ball center section, and a Maple tip section.  During the contest there was a wood lathe which wasn't being used, so I finished the top for him: http://images42.fotki.com/v1379/photos/2/35562/9155827/DSC01051-vi.jpg (http://images42.fotki.com/v1379/photos/2/35562/9155827/DSC01051-vi.jpg)
I returned home with a bunch of Pool Balls and various parts thereof with the idea of using them in tops at some later date.  Well, yesterday it was cold and raining in the morning and I was bored.  So I went down into the shop but I couldn't get inspired.........then I spotted the Pool Balls.....

Pool Ball Top #2 - Maple burl crown and tip section, YYF aluminum fixed tip:

Pool Ball Top #3 - Mostly Pool Ball with a Delrin tip section and a Guilia bearing tip:

Pool Ball #4 - Tulipwood Crown, Pool Ball section, Tulipwoos section, Delrin tip section, Guilia bearing tip (if you look closely at this one, you'll see that the grain in the 2 Tulipwood sections is aligned):

Group shot:

Number 2 has serious balance issues, the Maple burl has huge weight variance, but #3 and #4 play superbly.  Thanks again to Maurizio and Neff for creating the Guilia tip assembly.  I find it so versatile that it has inspired to make lots of tops lately..... ;D

That is so cool and fun.  I love pool balls and I love the way you used them in those top creations!  Great work, Eric.

I had seen Ben's pool top at worlds but I am still speechless at this group.

From #3 (15) I gather that pool balls are solid color throughout, the "stripes" in three layers? Is the number circle a plug? How much did you hollow that one?

Now you need to set up one of them spinning on a pool table close to a pocket and record a video while you hit it inside with the cue ball. I recommend you use #2 (7) and replace the tip with the rounded Throwback plastic tip  ;)  If you prefer you can send it to me and I'll record it for you ;D ::)

EDIT: You may need to get a mini pool ball (like for a children set) so you can end up with with a top that has the widest part (and if possible the center of mass) at the same height as the center of the a regular pool ball. That way it will just slide on the table when hit. You obviously need a low friction round tip. If you are up for the challenge  :P , a ball pen bearing tip.  :o

Yeah, really nice work Eric.  15 is my favorite too.  It's clearly a pool ball, but has been altered enough to make it something totally new and beautiful.

Great mixing of materials!
Makes me think about a hybrid toy by making the ball upper removable from the cone base for a spintop-kendama. :o

The cool new set of pool balls came on Thursday (see the set in the post above).  The polyester/resin on these balls is really unusual with black threads running through the color sections; it reminds me of some of the multicolored plastics that YoYoJam experimented with a few years ago.  I waited at least 2 hours till I started cutting them up... ::)
I made five more pool ball tops (well, six actually, but ball #11 split).  Unlike the other pool balls I've used, the numbers don't run all the way to the middle of the ball, so as I began shaping the balls into tops the numbers would stars to disappear as I went deeper.  Sometimes this lead to some interesting effects, sometimes not.  So, here they are:

#5 - like #3 it's pool ball, Delrin tip section, Guilia tip assembly (in fact all five have Guilia tips):

#6 - I took Neff's idea of putting the stripe on the diagonal, the blue tip section is cast, not dyed, blue Delrin; almost Gates Top shaped; the button is part of the ball:

#7 - I made this one for Noah who's favorite color is purple:

# 8 - This is my nod to the X-Mas season, the tip section is cast red Delrin, and again the button is from the ball:

#9 - My favorite so far.  Osage Orange, pool ball (again the stripe is on the diagonal), Osage Orange, Delrin.  The button not only came from the ball, but it has a step so that it press fits into the crown:

That solves a mystery.

Ok, now you HAVE to make a battle top arena with pockets like a pool table  :D  Players make a circle around and throw in order.  You get points by knocking tops into the pockets . . . Worlds 2011?  ;)

The 8 ball is notably absent from the first series...just sayin'

Amazing stuff, makes my head spin.

+1 on the "How'd he do that?" line of inquiry.

Was the ball material difficult to work with?
Title: Re: Nine ball in the corner pocket......
Post by: Eric on November 22, 2010, 01:51:40 PM
The pool balls are made from a polyester/resin that turns quite well.  It polishes nicely with steel wool and then rouge (polishing compound).
As for the 8 ball, it's next up.....can you guess who that might going to?

I think you did not get the clue . . . I think it is YOU who is getting the otto  :)

By the way, if the ball happened to have the 8 on both sides, a slight over polishing could get one to be an S  ;D

Eric thanks for showing us the possibilities! I have made two pool ball tops and the second one came out pretty nice I'll post a picture soon. The first one was a great training tool it's just no longer capable of spinning. I just got a new chuck so I'm having lots of fun in the shop. Thanks for the inspiration.

Post by: poptop on December 18, 2010, 01:47:49 PM
Yes, thanks for the inspiration Eric!

Here's mine...not a work of art, but I'm pleased.  I didn't hollow it enough, so I'm going to chop off the wood tip and tweak it some more.  The wood tip, now cracked, was temporary so I could try it out. This ball has a dark grey material in the center that is, well, off-center.  The top has a serious wobble at high speed, then settles down.  At first I thought the COG might be too high, but not really.  Not sure why it wobbles so much unless the grey core material has a different density?

Oh, yeah, this is the one that cracked in half too.  Gorilla glue wins!

Great job poptop!!!!
What wood is it?
As for the grey core material, I'm not sure about it.  All of the pool balls that I've used so far were made of the same material throughout.
Title: Re: Nine ball in the corner pocket......
Post by: poptop on December 18, 2010, 05:30:38 PM
Thanks guys.  Unfortunately, I'm not sure what kind of wood it is.  It came in a mixed lot of stopper sized hardwood turning squares.  The only hint I had was the initials "BW" were written on the piece I used.  I figured it would likely be bloodwood, but it looks a little different from another bit I also thought to be bloodwood.  I suppose the name is applied to more than one kind of wood.  Its a nice reddish orange, kinda porous like rosewood.

Very nice poptop! I love the wood. Here is what I came up with it has some slight balance issues but does play very well I may try to thin it down a bit, but it is a lot of fun my 8 on the upper dot is totally gone.

Nice turning guys! Keep up the great work.

Have been thinking more about top balancing. I think the center of mass needs to be as close to the centroid of the top as possible. The top always wants to rotate/orbit around the center of mass. If the the center of mass and the centroid differ, the top will wobble slightly. The more they differ, the more it wobbles. This would explain why squat shapes don't work well.

This seems particularly relevant when the tops are only partially hollow or made from two or more materials having different density.

Well, I was holding off on posting these until the end of the week as the one with the Guilia tip is headding off to Italy for X-Mas, but since this thread has cranked up again, and since Joe posted his nifty 8 Ball top, I could wait no longer.   ::)
Earlier in the thread poptop noted that an 8 Ball was noticeably abscent from my set.  I responded that the 8 Ball was up next, and Neff guessed correctly who it's going to.

8 Ball top #1 is a standard 8 Ball with a clear acrylic crown and tip section.  It has a Guilia tip, a button made from the ball and a clear acrylic plug to hold an LED.
8 Ball top #2 is a marbled ball from the fancy set of Pool balls that I got a few weeks ago.  It has a cast red Delrin tip section to match the red number, a matching button, and a modified bearing Trompo Grande tip which converts to fixed (Alan's design).  I'm almost out of Guilia tips, so I'm using the Trompo Grande ones, but I'm almost out of those too.....does anyone have extra bearing Trompo Grande tips they would sell me?
8 Ball top #3 is very much like #1 but with the converted Trompo Grande tip.  Here they are:

Just wonderful Eric! The lights are so cool.

That swirl top is just incredible. 8 is my favorite number and red is my favorite color.  ;)

Thanks All for the good reviews, getting such great feedback from all my spintop Hero's and Mentors means a lot to me Thanks Jim, Maurizo, Alan, Chris. Eric I must say I feel like I am performing spintop karaoke and my rendition is just a fun copy of the original work of art, I have been watching your amazing turnings for years and am very very happy that you are so involved in the board. A new energy and momentum is happening in our comunity and I am seeing the effects here at home, many more spintop players are showing up at our club Free, Griffin, Art, Ben, and Robin as well as some others have all been spinning lately (I helped two other members balance there new imperials last sunday) and we have BK's Imperials and some of the Mexican tops hanging on the wall ready for purchase.I believe we are spinning forward and collecting members YAHOO!!!

I really need to start reading this portion of the board more often.
Thanks Eric for making those, I've been thinking about billiard balls made into tops for quite some time and it's always nice when you imagine something in your mind and then find that someone has not only built it but done it in such a stunning manner, really those images melt over my mind like butter on pancakes.

I didn't notice anyone mention this but you can get 8balls (and i think also 9balls) at billiard stores by themselves if you just feel like making lots of 8ball tops, it's not as cheap as buying a set, but if you've got a thing for the black ball... the billiard store i went to a few weeks ago even had black cue balls, someone correct me if i'm wrong but i think cue balls are about a mm thicker than the rest aren't they?  I should also mention that if you are going to buy just 8balls from billiard stores, make sure you get a normal 8ball and not the wobbly kind, since they do sell wobbly 8balls too (and from the looks of their stock they sell a lot of wobbly 8balls at the store I went to), I was buying just an 8ball and the guy spun it on the counter to make sure it was a normal one.

Wobble eight balls?  I didn't think there was such a thing.  I have played a fair amount of pool over the years and never heard about the wobble eight so I looked up on on line.  Sure enough, there are plenty of places to pick one up to play with the mind of someone who might be beating you.  I thought the price variations were pretty interesting............all the way from $10 to $25!

So I finished repairing the mistakes in my first attempt I boared it out and rebuilt the top and bottom section its really light like 54 grams and I was just amazed to find out my eight ball top is 108 exactly double they both play great just way different.

The tips are from Spintastics trompo grande, I've been grinding them out with a chainsaw file. And the oak is some unfinished molding scraps from Home Depot. And the day after Christmas I got on craigslist and scored a set of pool balls, and me with no table whats a guy to do?
Title: Eric Wolff is Santa Claus
Post by: Neff on December 27, 2010, 12:09:54 PM
#6 - I took Neff's idea of putting the stripe on the diagonal, the blue tip section is cast, not dyed, blue Delrin; almost Gates Top shaped; the button is part of the ball:

And here it is on my desk!!!

Eric Wolff is just... well he is Santa Claus, all year.  I love the asymmetrical colorway, and the size is so... it just feels so right in your hand.  And blue is my favorite color.  Spins great - I'm going to set her up fixed when I get home - the surface of the pool ball is perfect for snapping.  Thank you Eric!

Thanks Chris, glad you like it.  Take care when converting to fixed as there may be additional spacers/shortened spacers (I can't remember which).  Most of my pool ball tops with the Guilia tips have slight modifications to the tip and/or spacers to insure proper fitment - the perils of making things on a wood lathe as opposed to a precision lathe.

I just got the 9 ball in the mail!!!! Thanks Santa Eric!

Have  you ever seen a pool ball number from the inside? Here it is:

Pool Ball #4 - Tulipwood Crown, Pool Ball section, Tulipwoos section, Delrin tip section, Guilia bearing tip (if you look closely at this one, you'll see that the grain in the 2 Tulipwood sections is aligned)
. . . #3 and #4 play superbly.
It does, indeed, play superbly!  8)  And in person it looks even better than in the picture!  :o The perfect Christmas present for a player collector. Thanks so much!!!

I love how he likes to fill suitcases with sets of unusual tops.  :)
There is a lot of variety there, shapes, tips, woods!

Here is another one (cue ball?) he made:

By the way, this thread is on the 6th page and more than a thousand views: pool ball tops are the rage!

My wife and I went to a casino a few days ago and she went to the gift shop. She found these poolball key chains so i bought all they had (2) , of course i had so try to make a top necklace out of one

I would like somebody to make a top from an undersized pool ball (like for a mini pool) so that the rim is at the same height than the center of a normal pool ball. Then place it spinning in a pool table and hit it with the cue ball into the pocket  8)

I can see on the first page of this thread where Eric shows the full set of pool balls he is going to start working with.  The number 1 in that picture sure looks like the top that I am now the proud owner of.  Is that correct, Eric?  It surely does spin well.

I am also wondering what kind of string you used on the top I received.  The string works very well with it.

i like the 6 ball. if you ever make it into a bearing top, i would be interested in buying it off you. you do fine work!!!

It is funny that you selected number 6.  If Eric did not buy any more sets of those, I have that ball and no, it is not a spintop yet.  At the workshop Eric gave at worlds, he made as chose a ball to mod and we selected number 3.  But Saturday night Eric put that ball as a target for Darren (if I recall correctly) after we had finished the official battles and we were messing around.  Somehow that ball ended up inside Figaro, where I found it the next day.  It has very very minor scratches from the target practice, but I think it is still fine for making a top.  Are you coming to nationals? You can drive from Anaheim.  I'll give it to you if you come and you can give it to Eric ;D

And I must say, these pool balls are VERY durable.  I am constantly amazed at the tough hits mine has taken and has yet to show any scratches.

So, Eric, where did you get the string?  Did you make it?  Or maybe it is a secret?

Believe it or not I got it here: http://www.yoyonation.com/product.php?productid=16598&cat=310&page=1 (http://www.yoyonation.com/product.php?productid=16598&cat=310&page=1)

Unfortunately, the longest length available is 60" so it's only good for 2" tops or smaller, but it works really well on my pool ball tops.

For the past couple of days I have been looking for a post about the super small tops I just received from Dick Stohr.  I still can't find it!  But I did run across this again and wanted to say how great and durable the #1 top is that I received from Eric the great.  Wow.  I use it all the time as it fits so nicely in my pocket and it is a wonderful conversation piece.  Actually, since my plan is not to give Cheeseball a break from world competition this year, this is the top I spin the most.

The Earl says "Thanks so much, again, Sir Eric".

Oops!  My apologies.  This is the downfall of posting early in the morning.  What I meant to say was "my plan is to give Cheeseball a break from world competition and not use him this year."  I guess I said the exact opposite, didn't I?

Sorry!
