Title: Any of you guys and gal ever hit yourself in the eye...
Post by: Neff on October 20, 2009, 03:57:44 PM
...with the knot of the string from a boomerang throw?  Repeatedly?  It hurts!!!  I've done it with all sizes of tops.  Seems to be worse with shorter chord.  I experiment with chord length a lot, and it never fails; take 4" off, throw, WHAP!, angry eyeball.  I've started wearing safety goggles.  I can make the string go above my head, but then the point is aimed nearly straight back at me and it's hard to correct.  Any advice before I start pricing glass eyeballs?

More times than I like to admit.  Especially larger tops!

Large Top -> Large Heavy String + Hard Yank = Hurt Body Parts

Yes, and it was very painful, by the way. Even, my eye got violet, purple, like if someone had hit me with a strong hit of his fist.
later, I  will explain how this happened to me and give details.

i've whipped myself with the string before, but only on a REALLY hard and REALLY wild throw. not that often, though. tops can be painful. just the other day i dropped a top (point down, of course) on my foot. with no shoes on. not the first time, won't be the last. thank goodness it was just a ripcord.

i yo-yo, too. i hurt myself yo-yoing all the time. 4A with a duncan butterfly (i know) and shot it up about 30 feet and caught it on my bicep. it took a week for the bruise to go away. 2A gave me some bad blisters when i started. 5A - duncan die. in the temple. hard.

toys can hurt.

was in a small confined space once and string got tangled when i was trying to boomerang. during the chaos and me trying to pull back the BK to prevent it from hitting a cabinet, the BK swung back and hit me right in the eye. blurred vision in one eye for almost 10 mins. now i wear a motorbike helmet when i boomerang ... . just kidding.

That's a big yes for me....I started to compare top strings to squirting oranges....seems the damn  things always seem to find your eye.

I dropped a top on my foot at Nats...right on top my canvas Vans.   When I got home from Nats I noticed a little round bruise on the top of my foot that matched the three or four on my thighs from doing hacky top  :D

All of these posts have me cracking up!  I mean, my sincere wishes for health, safety and both eyeballs and feet for all of you, but it’s just hilarious the damage we take for these “hobbies”

Actually, truth be told, there aren't many places where I haven't hit myself with the top.  Yes, I know what you are thinking.  I was hit there too.

Thankfully, my eyelids have been closed when I've been hit in the eye.  This long rope that goes with the preacher top has hit me in the face so many times I have lost count.

I have learned to tilt my head to the right (I'm a lefty) when I bring the rope back.  I guess I never thought of it as it is so automatic.  That rope really does hurt otherwise.  It is fun to hear what others do, just to have fun with a top. ;D

I am used to throw trapeezees as high as I I can. One day, I did this, and I didn`t catch the top with the string and the top hit the ground, and ...rebotò (I mean, the impact did the top to go up again) and hit me right in my left eye ang was so strong this hit, that even, I couldn`t open my etye, and start to cry, and when I arrived home, saw myself in the mirror, and was completetely closed amd violet, like if I had been into a fight and would have received a fist hit in my eye.
So, most of times, I use plastic glasses when i throw so high trapeezes.

I never considered the rebound from high tosses!  Interesting!!!  I do lots of high tosses with diabolos but never encounter any problems like this because it is made of rubber.

I had forgotten to say that even, when you do "snap start" you can get a hit in your eye if you don`t do it good. You must be careful doing snap start; it can damage your eye too trying to do this trick.

Searching for a specific image to respond to a post about spintop injuries on the Spanish (pulpowsky) forum, I found this old thread.  Well, the image I was looking for is even more relevant to this thread, so here it is:

I hope nobody is discouraged  :P (our tips are much safer).

Is that Mary and the baby Jesus looking on?

Is that Mary and the baby Jesus looking on?

Yes.  It is a tradition in Mexico to commission these pictures to thank the Virgin or a Saint for prayers answered (there is a name for them, but I don't recall it). In this case a mother thanks the Virgin of Guadalupe for saving his son's eye after a spintop accident.  It says that the top was brought by the Reyes Magos (Three Kings/Wise Men). That would have been January 6th, the traditional day for giving gifts to children. It is dated January 7th, so I guess the accident happened when he was learning to throw (boomerang?) the brand new top.

This metal plate was on an ebay auction a dozen years ago.  At the time I didn't spend more than $25 on any top thing, so I could not get it.  I wish I had, because it is a wonderful image.

Gives a whole new meaning to "Battle Tops".  You could do a real strong boomerang to one of Jim's or Richy's spike tops over your shoulder into an enemies face.

I just hit myself in the mouth yesterday, doing a corkscrew with a four inch wooden top. Long string = high speed =  blood. I went back and did a triple corkscrew with my hand lower, it worked. Big tops and corkscrews scare me. I guess no pain no gain? I hope I don't knock out a tooth. At my age I need all my teeth, not another dime.

I looked back over the posts and did not see anything about Dale Oliver.  I am thinking it was somewhere around 2003 that he showed up at our Miamisburg festival with a big red dot on the white of his eye.  I did not say anything about it for the longest time and finally I overheard him talking about his new quicksilver and how heavy it is and how you have to be careful with it and how he is a good example of that.  That seemed to be the scariest top injury to the eye I ever saw.

I tried searching this board but could not find the picture of Yo Thomas after the rope knot did a bad job on his eye.  One of his big tops did not throw as expected.  It was not pretty.

Mike, I am surprised you have not mentioned YOUR black eye at worlds 2010 (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,985.msg9313.html#msg9313):

. . .
The first battle was really wild. We used the Mexican tops that Salvador sent me (unfortunately, the Mexican yo-yo association did not bring the eXtrem tops and the Mexican wrestling masks.) We started with Mexican rules (that I learned from Beto210): the first player started with a spinner and the next one tried to hit him; if he missed or his top did not spin he would become the next target. But soon we relaxed the rules and did not require the spinning what encouraged really strong throws. The prime example was pplgrande, who was hitting the ceiling every time after his top bounced off the the carpet! In fact, a couple of times the top ended up spinning inside the light box lining the top of the walls.  It became somewhat dangerous and Bob Rule who was an spectator got hit several times, no matter where he stood (even when he went out of the room to the hallway!) But the only real injury was self-inflicted: Mike Hout's top bounced back straight to his face and left him with a black eye (somebody should post the picture)! Mike had also the most spectacular hits because the player before him didn't tape the top like the rest so it was "split" in two parts two times (actually it just opened but we all high-fived Mike).  We played to 5 hits and Takeshi was the winner.
. . .
I guess nobody took a photo of your eye :(

I am sitting at the computer trying to get my nose to quit bleeding.  Stupid hands.  I tossed the top right into my face and got my nose a pretty good one this time.

Just thought I would add to this thread!!!

Ouch.  Shove something in front of your gums and under your upper lip. (way up high the gums)  I have used a 1 inch by 1/4 inch by 1/16 inch folded paper napkin or even writing paper.  I don't know why it works but I have done this many times.  Get well soon.

Hey Everyone,

Nope, I can't say I have ever been hurt in anway by a spintop, though, I certainly believe it is possible...

I have broken a glass, and stubbed my toe pretty badly while playing, but that is it...

Yoyoing however... Is another story.

Thankfully there was no blood on the keyboard.  There is a definite slice in the nostril, though.  Just for the record, I also had a substantial bruise on my upper lip.  It is finally going away.  Now, back to better throws!!!

Hello Everyone,

That picture is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing it with us!

Well, I never really considered that tops to be an "eye" danger... But now that I think of it, Colombian tops often just have a nail sticking out of the bottom. I could see how this could end badly!

Thank you again!

No top related injuries yet. Other than my hand getting the feeling of burning from plastic tips or just too many catches in a short period of time and the number causing enough soreness to say "Ok, break time".

However, I've had the string come around and brush across my glasses a few times.

With the cheap Thai top I have, which seems to be a blob of plastic over a nail, that one I would have concerns about. The new cheapie Japanese top I got seems a bit more refined but mostly seems like a variation of a "nail through a block of wood". I really see those being more capable of putting an eye out.

Worse injury I have received when I did a hard throw of my Timbr LoveJoy top, which unfortunately had a snag and I got nailed in the nose. That hurt bad, knocked my glasses off(they were fine) and I had a cut on my nose on the outside and a nosebleed inside too. Kinda had to "take a knee" and recover from that for a few minutes. I have had my tops go by my face, but nothing ever seemed to come near enough to my eye to cause concern.

I guess it's time to upgrade to safety googles!

On the plane back from Mallorca I noticed what I thought at first was a large floater in my left eye. But then I realized it stayed fixed with respect with my field of vision and moved with it, so it had to be something on the retina. I went to an eye doctor and she told me I have a vitreous detachment and what I see is a Weiss ring. Nothing serious and very common if you are over 50. I may have it for a few moths or few years. During the festival I did hit that eye hard with a string that whipped back during a boomerang. So it might be a spintop injury.

I noticed what I thought at first was a large floater in my left eye.
I have had seven major surgeries for torn/detached retina, both eyes. First started when I was about 65. We are fortunate that ophthalmology science has advanced so much in recent years. In my case, just age related.

Ouch, when I read these comments, I am lucky that the rope did not hit me in the eye (yet..)
I've only had trouble with the rope itself on my finger. But it's painful enough.
Because when I wrap the top (mostly the wooden ones. The rope is more difficult to wrap around. ), the rope is constantly sliding across my finger. Results are a blister and sometimes even some skin.. It's painful, and I can't spin a top till it healed enough. I was thinking about using yo-yo gloves to wear.
To prevent this.
The thing is, those gloves are very thin material and smooth . I think it's polyester.
I'm going to test it out. Maybe the top will spin a bit longer, because my hand are a bit damp. Maybe it worns out the spin time. And with those gloves on, I can spare my finger.
The blister got open, but now it's almost healed. Time to put the gloves to the test! And spin a top of course!

I had this issue years back.  I got tired of the blisters and callouses, so changed the way I wind.  Try holding the string further from the top. Don't let it slide through your fingers but hold on.  When your had reaches the top, slide you hand away with less grip.  No Blisters!   Also watch some videos of how the Colombian players wind big tops.

@kirk Thank you for the tip.
I had an idea to avoid blisters. Made a flexible reusable band aid.  But i will tet out your solution too.
