Title: Spin Top Trip to Guadalajara
Post by: valerieyo on November 22, 2017, 12:17:55 PM
Hi Spinners!
Dale and I recently visited Cuper in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Our intent for the trip was to find a new molder for our yo-yos and spin tops and also to see Lake Chapala, which we had heard so much about.
When we contacted Cuper to say that we were going to visit, he went all out to honor Dale for his lifetime contribution to spin tops, arrange for Dale and me to meet many, many spin top players, provided outlets for us to perform along with his team at a school and museum, as well as entertain us in royal fashion for the 3 days we spent with him.  Jorge asked me to share a few photos of the experience, so here are a few of the many photos to highlight our spin top trip of a lifetime. (4 on each post) Thanks Cuper!

Photo 1: At an elementary school in Guadalajara.
Photo 2: Met with 2 members of Cuper's team.  David (Cuper's son) and Calvin, who escorted us around.
Photo 3: Dale and me with Eduardo who was a Duncan demonstrator back in the 70's and was taught by Ken Filary (one of Dale's Duncan friends) and Fernando, an longtime friend and string manufacturer from Mexico City.
Photo 4: Dale and me with "Oliver", Trompo Cuper's new mascot, named in honor of us. Wow.

Photo 5:  Part of Trompo Cuper's team performing at the Trompo Magico museum.
Photo 6: Dale with Cuper and Fernamdo, showing his awards for world contribution to spin top.
Photo 7:  I was asked to do a little spin top there as well.
Photo 8:  All the spin top players we could gather together...throwing a spinner and fingering "number 1"....I guess that spin tops are number 1 or Trompo Cuper is number 1.  Both apply.  :)

Wonderful photos, Val!
Cuper really went out his way to assemble a group of Top people and honor Dale!
This was one of the first official events of the Mexican Top Association (Asociación Mexicana de Trompo, AMT). Well done!

Here is one of the videos on the AMT channel, with El Rey del Trompo, Gerardo, throwing his giant top and demos by Val and Dale:

I would like to know more about Gerardo, big top. Size, bearing or straight tip, hallow and material? It looks like it can do a lot more tricks.

I love that Cuper named Oliver the Trompos Cuper "mascot" (cartoon kid).  ;D

Cuper: Are you sure Gerardo's giant top is made of wood from Uruguay and not Paraguay?  :-\  So, is it solid? I was sure it had to be hollow. Balsa wood perhaps?
Quote
The balsa wood tree, scientifically named Ochroma lagopus, is a relatively fast growing plant found primarily in Central and South America. Balsa wood trees grow best under the conditions found in rainforests, ideally in mountainous terrain between rivers. The country of Ecuador is perhaps the largest exporter of balsa wood, although many local farmers consider the plant to be little more than a weed.

Cecil: You can see Gerardo performing in a Circus on this thread: link (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,1395.msg14076.html#msg14076)
