Where did you get the dimensions?  I was thinking about making one but was going to buy one to get the measurements first.  Nice!

I just ordered a 2-pack from that place, so I guess I should have them by the end of the week. I'll go get out my caliper and try to send the specs your way. That might help. I think in your case, while the work looks need, I think the fact that there's no arc in the center is what's preventing your kururin to continue it's momentum. It's just stopping, right? If not stopping,it's probably losing virtually all the momentum.

I was thinking about this last night. You'd just need to find something like a coin or button, then make a shallow hoop  and secure it to a smooth surface(like wax paper.parchment paper, waxy side up). Pour in some flowable silicone, remove the excess, let it cure for 24 hours. Trim t fit, adhere with some sort of contact cement or super glue. Another option is similar, just make a rectangular mold, pour to 1mm depth(or maybe less) with flowable silicone. If you've ever bought One Drop Flow Groove pads, it would be like this except not so thick, but same idea: strip. If you can punch to proper size, that would be ideal, otherwise, perhaps a trace with a Sharpie then skillfully excise with a #11 Xacto/surgical blade. Another idea would be if there was a really thick/rubbery tape that could be cut up, but I don't know of any. I also had to use some of that Leak Stop, and I would think if that was sprayed onto a surface coated with a non-stick spray, it could be sprayed on and left to cure. It sort of levels out a bit, but it's still kinda sloppy and messy to use. Might take some practice to get the depth good but could probably be sanded to proper thickness.

Excellent. I knew taking that slot out of the center would make the difference. Can't wait to see photos!

a fellow here in T.O asked if i could make him one so i went ahead and did that and made a second for myself. most importantly he supplied me with measurements from a legit kururin.....give a man a fish @-@
he requested it not to have a linseed oil finish so in these pics both are still unfinished but i later went ahead and oiled mine as per tradition in the house of jack  ;D

Title: Purchasing Kukurin
Post by: butterfingers on March 16, 2017, 08:27:28 AM
Kururin are expensive - I have seen another brand called a Huli Stick and Sweets Kendama has made one called "The Jammer". I purchased two on Amazon for my son and they were $14 a piece - not a bargain for a couple of shaped dowels - but he uses them often (and that's the real point). Anyway, I just placed an order from Topspin and they have the identical item for $7.62. A much better price. If anyone is placing an order for top stuff through Topspin and needs a Kururin, this is a less expensive source.

tbh i was a little dissapointed with the muku studios kururin, i made my kururin before getting the name brand one and i thought the name brand would work better or easier or something but in fact it was the opposite lol

If I remember, your proportions were off a bit compared to the name brand, with the widest point being a bit larger. I would think that this would support your observation that your home-turned model would perform better than store-bought.

I doubt this will take off like yoyos or tops or kendama. From what I know, kendama has some rather rigid specs in regards to nearly every aspect, at least for JKA approval. This leaves little to no room for creativity or for "growing the sport" from a competitive level. I guess it's a "level the playing field, only the best can survive" approach. The western approach to Kendama has been using the basics as a starting point and freely experimenting from there with little concern or desire to be JKA compliant. Not that it makes any difference overall, but I've found I prefer JKA Approved kedamas, despite most of mine not being JKA approved, only one. With tops, we've seen changes to dimensions and where/how weight is distributed. Similarly, with yoyos, especially with this bi-metal craze, companies are again playing with dimensions and focusing weight while also trying to support the growing trend of horizontal style play coupled with top-on fingerspins.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with deviating from the "spec".  If it can be made better, why not?
