Title: Trick of the week by Spintop.cz - 1st Year
Post by: Hrosik on February 08, 2016, 12:07:20 PM
Hi guys,
as you probably know, me and Jakub are running czech website about tops, we also introduced eshop with S8, Duncan and Energia tops a month ago. Our new project is called Trick of the week and I think that it speaks for itself. Every week we are going to upload a video of some interesting trick or variation on our YouTube channel. You can expect POV videos with slow-motion footage at the end. This topic is here just to let you know about new tricks, but feel free to comment them or let us know about something new to try.

Here is a list of all the videos: https://youtu.be/w1tnTlGkqBc?list=PL-XAs_P0_hwWjdBKNyDHQh3DbdbNZpSA3

The Trick of the Week is a wonderful project!
I am sure it will be motivational for many players.

It will be fun to try to reproduce them every week!  :)

Thanks!

Very nice!
An ambitious project.
A second camera angle would be cool too.

I tried to do the cross jump today. I thought it was going to be easier, but it was difficult to get out the habit of the normal jump.
I was getting close when the string caught one of my shoulders and made the top swing onto my lower back: ouch!  :'( I had to quit after that.
Maybe I'll try again tomorrow. Or perhaps I'll just practice the Miguelanchelo patch tricks: it is safer!  :P

Great that you've tried the trick  ;) Sorry for your back, I hope it's getting better.

Other jump rope tricks should be possible too, like backwards toad:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkdYhklYi84

or backwards EB:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t3H5ft7aas

About Miguelanchelo patch, I asked him to send me better quality of video then I crop it and turn 90° some tricks. Now it's much easier to learn tricks from (especially if you download video and play it frame by frame). I've sent him also video file so he can upload it on his youtube channel. Now it's just on our spintop.cz youtube channel as private video:

Those jumps look pretty crazy to combine with a top!  ::)

You had a great idea to improve the quality of Miguelanchelo's patch video. I was thinking in doing the same but I have been lazy. However, when I watched the video you linked to, the sections with the tricks rotated 90 degrees are shown black. Can you see them on youtube?

Aaaa, you're right, probably some rendering mistake. I'll have to repair it.

Monday mornings are nicer when there is a trick of the week to watch!  :)

I would describe it as a variation of boleadoras butterfly plus a pirouette ending on a (Mark Hayward's) suicide. Definitely a trick to do with lots of space around!
The slow motion POV is great!
Thanks!

So here is number four. I haven't got enough time, to share it with you yesterday, but it was on YouTube, so maybe some of you have seen it already.

PS: I forgot to change a number in the beginning of video, sorry.

Thanks again!
When we had compulsories, one-hand-lasso was my less reliable trick. Add a pirouette and it is a race to see if I can get it before becoming dizzy!  :P

PS: I forgot to change a number in the beginning of video, sorry.
You can superpose a note with the correct number using the youtube editing tool.

Yes, I'm planning to do that as soon as I get home. We are in Czech Republic for an hour now, but still not home. :)

I want to work on one hand lassos too, I sometimes get few, but it's not ready for stage.

About the music. I'm sure it's blocked in some countries (only without sound) and/or on mobile devices somewhere. But for now, since I don't have any source of open-source music, I would like to use anything I like across all genres, so everyone enjoyed them.

And thank you all for the support, we have already many of them prepared for next two months at least. And a little sneak-peak, next Monday I'll post one from France, people from festival know, that I stayed up for a long time to get it.

You're absolutely right, it's harder than it looks, and ta0 is right, you make it look pretty darn easy.

Chris: The hardest part I think is not catching the top, but getting the loop of string moving other direction. I actually let one wrap of string slip down my hand during the trick, so it's not that perfect. I've never seen that Bird Go! trick, next thing to learn, you are master of these whips Mr. Neff! And happy birthday!

And it's Monday and that means new Trick of the week is out! I wanted to share with you different one, but the camera angle on it was quite bad, so I have to film it again later, now the weather in Czech Republic is cold and rainy, not good for outdoor play at all >:(. But this one is also from Loon-Plage festival. I inspired with Trompillo's Finger Nest and added a simple "spiral" (system of this forum won't let me use "c*rl", with 'u' instead of star, but I'm sure, it's the right name of this trick). Enjoy!

Another nice but very challenging trick!

Sunday I completed my first TOTW: boomerang pirouette with one-hand-lasso. A few more tries and I would have fallen on the ground, dizzy.

The reverse WWW is what I was trying to to with "Bird Go!"

Amazing tricks, Daniel! Looking forward to future installments.

Anyone: Having twirled many a top by various means but never having thrown one, l'm curious about string design -- for example, the measures taken to reduce friction against the metal tip. Besides a judicious choice of string material,  are  coatings or lubricants used?

Post by: Dick Stohr on March 08, 2016, 01:55:24 PM
One way to reduce the friction is to use a bearing tip. But for regenerations the friction is necessary to add speed to the spin.

Thanks for straightening me out on bearing tips, Dick! Should have known that they're not just to reduce friction when the top's on the ground. Seems like many if not most of the tops flying around on this forum (pun intended) rarely touch the ground.

It's 3 PM on Monday in Czech Republic and that means, it's time for another Trick of the week! The normal Magnetic Wire part is much harder than the UD one in this situation because the top is just not spinning at all after waiting a moment to get a full turn on it.

Hey, I did #7!  :)
I used a QuickSilver with diabolo tip and a narrow string. I was trying to do Michelangelo's Patch 4X fixed-tip Mach 5 but I got frustrated and changed to this one. I was surprised to get it in just a few tries. I did regenerate a little more out of the snap start than on the video, but I think the top also ended with a little more spin on my hand.

Very nice! It is interesting that you are chasing the top with your hand as it comes by on your left instead of leading the top as it comes to you on the right.
Thanks guys. I think it's more difficult to come up with new and easy trick but we'll try  ;)
Perhaps some interesting combinations of simpler tricks would be interesting to your fans.  There are so many three trick combination possibilities.  But there is a bit of a puzzle to figure out which tricks can be done with less spin and therefore be at the end of the combination.

Because chasing the top on left side is much easier for string setup and for starting merry go round  ;)

Yes, doing several roller-coasters (or sewing machines) without letting go the string from the left hand (like when using a ring) before going into the trick really helps.

Thanks again for the weekly challenge!

Although that trick with the top UD is for elite players, the boomerang-behind-the-back-lasso with the top straight would be a good and fun trick for any advanced player to try.

Thanks guys. I know that this trick (and many others from series) are probably difficult to try for many players but as ta0 says, all of you can try easier variation like BtB lasso, BtB lasso from boomerand, UD boomerang...and after some time if you master these trick you can join them together  ;)

Check the new TotW:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo0mmSlpvr0

It's an idea of continuous corkscrew (we were discussing it with Taka at EYYC) but this way removes one loop around arm in each repetition. Last year Johnm sent me an message with an idea on closed loop continuous corkscrew but I don't manage it yet.

Mondays are not that bad with a Trick of the Week!  :) Thanks!

I find the "open" (no bind) corkscrew easier to do with fixed tip than bearing tip, I don't know why. But obviously for attempting multiple corkscrews it is better a bearing top.
Your way of getting more slack to start the second corkscrew by eliminating one wrap is elegant. But to do more repetitions I would do what players use to do in the early 2000's: opening the wraps one by one by pinching them with the fingers.

Post by: ta0 on May 05, 2016, 03:40:39 PM
I did the TOW double corkscrew.
I also practiced the open (no-bind) corkscrew. Using a Chico 2.0 I could do 2 open corkscrews in a row many times and once 3 in a row. I think with a little more practice I could do 5 with one throw. The limit is the spin of the top as it is difficult to do the open corkscrew if top slows too much.

I recorded a little video with four. Off camera did five and started a 6th. The big tip of the Chico top probably helps.

In the 60's Duncan trick list they had the twin-spin thrown behind the back and caught on the front: Twin Orbits.

That trick is not very easy but yours should be much more difficult.

Thanks for the challenge!

It's Trompos Cometa Twins, they're very light, so almost no hard tricks possible, but you can get you can get a one repetition of both handed crazy 8's on a good day.

Circle the Globe is boomerang around the back (by the way, it seems they mistakenly swapped the photo with Twin Orbits).
Crazy Maze is hand passing under the legs and behind the back.
Double Trouble is twin boomerang. Double Daze is twin under the leg boomerang. Gemini Jump is twin sky rocket.

Thanks guys, funny comments  :) Original idea is not to catch the button (and then throw) but just kick the button and then catch it between foot and ground to do elevator. But it's too difficult  :D

For practising, start learning:
1) suns
2) suicide
3) elevators

Tip: Top has to spin very fast (turning slow on string) to easily make a loop around the tip.

Wow!  :o  When I tried the 3 top cascade from the boomerang on my Juggle Top Fest (http://www.ta0.com/forum/index.php/topic,532.msg4218.html#msg4218) video I never dreamed that I could reunite the double spin on the fly. That really completes the trick.  8)  8)  8) I am very happy to see it done. I tip my hat to you!

By the way, I practiced a little the TOW18 (suicide to lift) and was close. I need to change the hollow point to a top that can actually climb the string. The move of the sun with release (actually more like a M. Hayward suicide/comet without releasing one hand) is a new move that I had not seen in any other tick. Fun to do.
I also did TOW17: had success on the second try (I already had down the behind-the-back catch.)

No, Daniel, what I did was just experiment a little. What YOU did was impressive! I would even say it was epic!
When I originally posted the Juggle Top Fest video I said that the only juggling with tops I would like to continue practicing was from a boomerang with a the nested (twin) top. But I never did. After watching your achievement I may start practicing it again (but I doubt I can get the tops to nest at the end).

I hope you do! Once you get juggling with 3 balls dialed in, it's only about few hours of practice and you get there! One interesting thing, at the end, I can't just throw the smaller top into a bigger one because they are in a wrong order when I'm juggling with them. So I throw the smaller one from my left hand up, catch the bigger one to my left hand and then the smaller one just hopefully falls inside it. In other words, when ending the combo, I don't throw the smaller top from my right hand to the bigger top on my left hand, I just throw the smaller one from left hand into the air and catch it again with my left hand (to the bigger top). I don't think anyone noticed that, it would need a better angle, normal video, not POV.

I'd say that finding a more difficult way of doing tricks is not that hard. Thinking of easier tricks is definitely harder for me.  :D

We got our order from Taka few weeks ago and that means few Japan themed tricks are going to come soon, here is a first one. Doing normal top tricks with koma is definitely harder, but way more fun too! Jack: Definitely not an easy one with normal-tiped koma, but I think, that some Japanese koma players are able to do it.

Number 24 is koma again!

Actually, I had little problem doing the arm walker with a normal koma tip, both with and without the weight ring. I think this size of koma are pretty easy to snap start.

I guess I have done about half of the tricks on this series. Keep them coming that I will try to catch up one day!  ::)

You're right Jack, it's a blind catch. It must be very hard to catch it regularly but if you are trying it for few minutes you'll probably catch it without problems  ;)

Well, I don't think I would call it simple and I doubt that very many players can do it!  ::)

I have actually practiced quite a bit the part after the lasso but I was not consistent enough to do it on stage.
I would say that it is a great combo for those who want to take their play to the next level.

So I see the TOTW did not take the day of for the US holiday. :)
Are you pulling up with both hands to reduce the slow down due to the left hand pull?  It looks like it will be hard to keep lots of spin.  It is a very cool trick.

Sorry guys for late reply...

Jack: Florida would be nice, but it's exactly here (https://www.google.cz/maps/@49.0624891,16.0925987,17z?hl=cs).

ta0: exactly...if you can control the tilt  :)

Kirk: When I'm throwing the top up from string I'm pulling with both hands (maybe left hand a bit more) and I think that it doesn't slow down the top at all because top is sliding on the string all the time so you almost can't notice any slow down.

NEW trick is here, Daniel comes up with quite funny name so enjoy the trick  ;)

New trick is coming  :)

It's called Infinite Bondage. In first left (hand) to right transition right hand goes "inside" and it unwraps one loop from right hand. In second left to right transition right hand goes "outside" so number of wraps is unchanged. You can combine this moves as you like  ;)

On the first set it seems that no twists were added around the tip, but on the second set it started to accumulate twists. I have to think about it (after I untie by brain knot).

Here is your challenge: wrap a string (the most difficult part), throw a boomerang, invert the sombrero cap and quickly put it back on the bottle. :P

Some tops require pencil instead of finger for this trick. If it looks easy for you, add pirouette between throw under the leg and UD catch  ;) I didn't managed to do it with pirouette but it's just about practise.

Boomerang the sombrero cap and then cap the bottle by inverting the hand into the bottle (probably not completely upside down, but enough not to spill tequila if there was any inside.)  ;D

I tried the Infinite Bondage trick today. I used a Chico 2.0 as it makes it easier to keep the top on the string.
I had some trouble bringing the top back to the right without hitting the string, but it was lots of fun.
Thanks guys for all the innovation!

We're glad you are enjoying it! We hope our tricks inspire other players too, if you hit any, just take a video of it and post it here for other players to see!

And as always, here is a new one. You can take it as two separate tricks, but they nicely fit into each other.

I guess the heavy S8 button is perfect for the counter-weight stuff.

I have this sinking feeling that I am falling behind of the state-of-the-art spinning . . . But one should persevere!  ;D

Thanks guys for the inspiration!

Actually it is harder than it looks to keep the top on string  :D But I've been doing it with fixed tip so maybe bearing tip or different tip shape helps. Anyway give us know about your progress guys  ;)

Today it's Daniels video of Cast Whip inspirated by offstring yoyo trick (https://yoyotricks.com/yoyo-tricks/cast-whip/8280/).

BTW: Daniel is a junior world record (http://www.yo-yos.net/world%20records.htm) holder for offstring whips (104 in a row).

The difference between the regular whip and the cast whip seems very subtle. Perhaps it is more obvious with a yo-yo.
On the video the top body goes through the loop: is that necessary for it to be a cast whip?

Well done!

Jorge: Maybe it is hard to see it on a video, but there is a noticeable difference. In normal whip, you catch the top into a loop, but in cast whip you let the top fall into the loop from above.

My execution on the video is not one of the best, but it is pretty hard to catch it :D. I caught it a bit late. In best scenario, the top catches the string when the loop is in horizontal position, that's all. It goes through the loop on the video because I caught it a bit late.

After reading your description, Daniel, I am thinking that when I do the underhand whip with the full string, the way I catch the top is similar to a "cast" catch.
On the other hand, if I do it with a short loop, it would be a regular whip (string hits the tip, not vice versa). I can see that doing the cast overhand is more difficult.

Was that a toothpick? That requires great accuracy!
The inversion was perfect!
I am surprised it spun that long after the inversion.
I don't have the aluminum MicroTop but now I wish I did. Perhaps I can try it with Trompillo's micro top :-\

Yes, I suppose I should call it Toothpick Sharpener then :D
I had to be very carefull with the inverison otherwise the top would stop spinning rightaway. You just have to tilt the top a bit on the toothpick and then finish the balancing on the hand.
I don't remember how Trompillo's micro top looks, but give it a try! And I recommend you to buy Ben's aluminium MicroTop, it is a great throw!

This was a great excuse to play with Taka's koma. But I had a lot of trouble flipping the top as the "stem" is short and it kept hitting my hand. So I finally did it from a trapeze.

Thanks for the motivation!

Around right-leg&right-arm&right-leg, to finger nest, to around left-leg&righ-arm&left-leg: super combo! 8)
Going around both extremities at the same time should have its own name. Around left (or right) wing/sector/flank?

The snow (I believe that is the name of the white stuff  :P) looks great on the video. But extra difficulty-points for frozen fingers!

I like it! Very nice variation of Around the Arm.  8)

I tried it today. The main difficulty I found was in keeping the string at the right place on the thumb to have the opening for the top. Once I got that right, hitting the string did not seem more difficult than the regular around the arm.
