Thailand tops
« on: September 05, 2024, 06:04:11 PM »

Jim sent me the spelling for spintop in Thai. I researched a little more and found that:

Lūk k̄h̀āng h̄mun = ลูก ข่าง หมุน = ลูกข่างหมุน = spinning top

Lūk = ลูก = child
k̄h̀āng = ข่าง = top (also news, information, word, breeze)
h̄mun = หมุน = spin

but the lūk and h̄mun are optional

A search with those terms found videos mostly of tops with a long nail but a conical crown similar to Chinese tuolos
(you can use subtitles plus automatic translation and it works pretty well):

On this talent TV show they demonstrate precision target and boomerang. Before you dismiss it, watch the match striking starting at 12:30:

I think the show is called Super 60+ because you have to be over 60 and super to participate  :)

There are Hmong in Thailand (the "mountain people") and there was a kid on the TV talent show Super 10 demonstrating Tuj Lub skills:

There are also ethnic Yunnan Chinese populations in Thailand and they play something between tuj lub and a gasing battle:

Sometimes the tops are very flat:
