Pointed question about spin top inversion.
« on: August 11, 2023, 09:28:12 AM »

Can any of you give me a hint about what kind of Jiu-Jitsu type set up is required to invert a top onto the tip of a pen? I feel like there is probably a key to it that I am fighting, because I am not in the ball park so far.
Thanks.

It’s actually not too ridiculously complicated, but it does require a certain type of indent on the crown of the top. Which top are you using?

The "giraboli" trick was popularized by Trompos Space (it may have been pulpowsky's idea to add the indent to do the trick). But I recall Herman Lau doing it with a toothpick on one of the first spintop videos I ever saw circa 2000.

Put the tip of the pen on the indent in the center of the crown, applying light pressure.
Move the hand towards the non-throwing side, letting the top lean and eventually flip, while keeping the tip on the crown. This is similar to what you do to achieve the "Mexican drop".
At the beginning it may be easier to just rotate your whole body (counter-clockwise for right-handed).
To get it back upright, rotate your hand/body in the opposite direction.

Thank you. After an attempt at that, I can see I need to practice this outside, so tomorrow morning.
It makes sense, and it is clear what needs to be done with the ccw motion, but the amount of pressure and the coordination part needs some work for sure.
Thank you for the name of the trick, there is a tutorial on YouTube.

Could you please include that link to the YouTube tutorial?
I don't even know what trick you are talking about here...

Javi is using there a bearing top, what makes it considerably easier to force the flip.

I would add to my previous advice to raise the hand pushing directly in the direction of the top axis. You continue pushing following the top as it flips.

Thanks, I will try that outside tomorrow. I did see they used a bearing tip in the tutorial and I tried with one like that and it seemed pretty easy, the fixed tip is much jumpier!

Thank you ta0, got it with the fixed tip this morning, pushing up a little really helped.

Nice!

With tops the little details (in technique) can make a big difference.
