Banana leaf string and machete spintop from Philippines
« on: March 14, 2023, 11:49:31 AM »

A very nice video from Mindanao, Philippines, showing the making of a top with a machete and the string using banana leaves. It also shows some spintop ("trumpo" ?) play.

It is curious that the nail that will become the tip is hammered in and then cut flush with the wood before starting to carve the top.
I would like to have one in my collection, although I suspect it will crack with time as the wood is completely green and not dried.

The most interesting part is the making of the string. I'm surprised that just rolling the "treads" a bit with the hand achieves a string with enough cohesion.

The style of throw is similar to ours, holding the top tip up. While the guy that throws at 11:41 wraps it in what we consider the right direction (so the top rolls from the hand), the kid in the pink shirt at 10:47 makes a reverse wrap but still has a successful throw.

Good find !really roots  8)

The nail / tip hammered before turning is very common in traditional wood work
it provides a fair centering of the tip

indonesia : we have tried to invite somebody for Marines with Ludo but no success

But cut flush with the wood? That surprised me. Why not leave the nail sticking out?
