Also, I notice that there is little information on where to purchase tops, top models, etc.  Do many players make their own?

Lots of the online yoyo stores sell tops. YoYoExpert, yo-yosam and more. Strummol8 tops are some of the nicest playing tops ever made. I recommend the Guilia. There is a preorder right now on the makers site. Here’s a link.

In addition to the good recommendations of vegabomb, I wanted to suggest to go to Chris Neff's site and get a Sweetle. That is an excellent top as well.  Although everything seems to be "sold out" today, I would contact Chris and ask him if that is true.
