Really enjoyed that!

This 1st time through, I was most struck by the large percentage of tops with no decoration other than perhaps a wood stain or clear coat -- the first few large gasing notwithstanding.

A few had simple decorative surface reliefs like circumferential grooves. A few had paint. Most were very dark. And these trends seemed to cut across all shapes, sizes, and launching methods.

Contrast that with the decorations commonly seen in Japanese and European tops over the last 2 centuries. In these traditions, bright colors are the norm. And the Japanese are pretty stuck on light-colored wood.

Wonder why the big difference? Readily available wood types?  Access to bright natural pigments? Maybe in part. Access to cheap paint? Seems unlikely these days.

Very nice! Specially because each group of tops has an information label with it's name, local name (nama lokal), origin (asal), material (bahan), shape (bentuk) and type (Jenis).

I guess the book that appears towards the beginning is the one from Aras.

I really want one of the Monas gasing (but I want the more elaborate ones with feathers).

thanx Larry
very excellent document, what a variety of forms and woods !
and the written specs for each top give an added information
now we know for sure that Gasing is a generic term

Indonesian and Malaysian Gaseng is fun to play with. Especially with the pull string.
