Does book give any dates for the launcher?

I did some research : this drawing was first printed by "l'école des loisirs", a publishing company,in 1965 ;
they collaborated with various magazines for children at the time,
it was in the trend of "éducation populaire", which aimed at giving more autonomy
and awareness to children (....)

The yellow and B&W test tops have large AMIs and small scrape angles. To twirl them successfully, you need good tilt control at high torque. That's a tall order for an unpracticed hand but no problem with the starter. The red top has a large scrape angle, but its combo of large AMI and high critical speed calls for even more torque. The starter helps there, too.

Thanks, Mike! That strictly video appearance combines stroboscopic (frame-rate) and rolling-shutter effects. You don't see anything like it in person.

As you sweep the flashing rate of a variable-speed strobe light, a top like this produces a seemingly endless sequence of stroboscopic patterns without the rolling-shutter distortions, which are unique to digital video cameras (including phone cameras).

It's fun to design specifically for video or strobe appearance at speed. But sometimes, good things just happen, as in this case.
