New finger-top design...scalloped edges
« on: October 10, 2016, 06:24:05 PM »

I'm not too sure about how these new scalloped edge top designs will play out. What do you think?

They look really nice to me, both still and spinning.

Gorgeous!

I am now re-reading a book titled The Symmetry of Things and this reminds of the beautiful drawings in the book. Maybe one day (when I am retired and have time) I can get myself a rose engine  :)

Several years ago, the AAW published an article by Jon Magill on how to build a relatively inexpensive "MDF" rose engine. The article and plans are still available on Jon's site. Here's the link: http://www.whidbeyworks.com/root/MDF_Rose_Engine.html

If you're willing to spend some serious money ($5k +) on a life-changing tool and hobby, then have a look at the Lindow rose engine. It's pretty much the best turn-key "hobbist" machine/system available: https://lindowmachineworks.com/lindow-rose-engine-menu/lindow-rose-engine-accessories/

And if you have virtually unlimited cash ($85k +), and want the best modern design rose engine on earth, consider the limited availability Made machine: https://madelathe.com/

They look great -- especially the tri-color version. The scallops will cut into spin time, but who cares?

If that's the one by Conway et al., I'm very impressed, ta0! Gave up a third of the way through, as I just couldn't follow their unusual approach -- despite more than a passing familiarity with crystallographic symmetry.

Actually, I found it much more intuitive than the traditional approach using group theory. I enjoyed the first section, struggled but followed the demonstrations on the second section and gave up and just looked at the drawings on the third section  ::) I may give the third section another try. But even leaving out the demonstrations, the book is eye candy  8)

No doubt about that. Maybe I'll have another go at it.

I just found out that Conway died back in April due to complications of covid. That such genius could be extinguished by this stupid virus is very sad  :'(
