Looking for discarded top to make worlds trophy
« on: July 08, 2013, 11:08:26 AM »

Last year we had super-nice trophies for worlds:

For 1st place I used as a base a premium baseball trophy (Titlecraft Legacy series) and replaced the original wooden baseball by a wooden broken top I had picked up at johnm's shop. I just glued it back together and painted it with gold paint. This year I am planing to build a base from scratch to save the money.  But it would help if somebody had a discarded top (a failed turning attempt?) about 4" size, that he is willing to donate.

For second and third place I used Spintastics Trompo Grandes.  Again, if you want to donate a couple that are broken, it would help.

Thanks a lot for the offers.  I'll send you a pm, Walt.
I would turn it myself, but I am very slow and I still have to make the rest of the trophy and also finish the top I will enter in the mod contest.

on a side note:
i think that you should announce the main events besides the comp

corkscrew contest
modding
spintop battle
lightbulbs
rascals
skittles
workshops
etc ....

I dream of a Spintop Triathlon--Freestyle, Battle Tops, and Rascals. Though I am not the best at any one discipline, I am very good at all three. I could be a contender. I could be somebody.

The Duncan rejects are from the late 50's or early 60's I think.  Wood.  Got them from Jim Schrieber's estate when he died a few years ago.

I got the 4 incher from Watts' Tops (signed as # 208). I would not call it a reject: it plays very well!  I will make the trophy in a way that the top is intact and can be taken off to play if wanted.  Thanks a lot Walt!

Spintastics donated 7 Trompo Grande bodies to make trophies: thanks Dale!!!

The trophies are coming along well. I should be able to finish them during the weekend. Second and Third place (plus a bonus one) will be similar to last year.  For first place I am making one that I think will be as impressive as last year's.  The plaque will be:

Here is a photo of the 2013 trophies:

Besides 1st, 2nd and 3rd freestyles, I made one for the best freestyle with a "traditional" top.  This will go to one of the Colombians, unless somebody else (Japanese?) also freestyles with a solid wooden top.   On the right is the Jim Boehm "traveling" trophy for the corkscrew challenge.  I also made some medals to add to whatever Greg has for tops.

The first place trophy has a great playing 4 inch Watts' Top (#208, although I gold-glitter painted over the signature and number).  It is attached with a magnet to the column and can be pulled right out to play  ::) It can be left vertical or with some leaning (like a precessing top).  The cover of the column also is attached with magnets and can be opened to store a string (not provided) or a medal, etc.
