Just an intro!
« on: December 09, 2021, 08:12:30 AM »

Good morning all from, Ohio USA. Thought I'd introduce myself.
I go by Ed, 70 years old and recently retired after 40 years as a personal financial advisor.
Last 25 years I've been collecting "mini magic" (Think, magic tricks smaller than 8"x8" ish.) So not new to this whole collecting obsession. Mostly Tenyo, Alan Warner and Magic Wagon & a lot of others.
Look them up. VERY COOL STUFF!
I had over 450 pieces, but have been selling a lot off to make it easier on my family when I'm gone, and I'm VERY glad I did. Even with a lot of experience, it really was hard to do, and can't imagine how hard it would have been for my family.
As for Top Tastes, so far I'm a mostly modern, high tech and a shiny top kinda guy. I stumbled onto tops looking for a gift for my grandkids. Tungsten, Titanium, Silver, and spin forever. I was hooked.
But I recently found throwing tops and am intrigued by their color age, uniqueness. So hope you don't mind some questions as I learn.
Have a great holiday and I hope that your Gift Spirit brings brings you that Top you REALLY REALLY WANT  ;D ;D ;D

Welcome to the board.  Glad to hear of your interest in spinning things.  Where are you from in Ohio?  I am a little south of Dayton, OH.

Welcome to the board, Ed!

Getting rid of a collection and starting another one?  ;D At least, for the most part, vintage tops will be less expensive to collect than Magic Wagon, from what I just saw.

Yes, ask all the question that you want! For vintage tops, use the Collecting board on the forum.

Welcome aboard, Ed! You won't have any trouble getting us to talk tops with you, regardless of type.

Thanks all. Cincinnati  :)
After a few weeks, now I love some of the new gorgeous high end, exotic wood tops.
I might just have to buy a lathe!
Hmmm, Do I buy the lathe first, or,,,,,,, learn how to use one first?
Hmmm, How do I make wood shiny and cool like the pictures.
And what kind of tree has two colors???
I think I have some homework to do & a new hobby?

hello again ed

about the woodturning thing ,you should get a basic knowledge and practise before buying a lathe
it can be a dangerous machine and the tools are sharp etc ....

2 color wood = segmented wood  = gluing several layers of wood together to obtain a block , then turn

cheers

I agree with Jim. Go to AAW American Association of Woodturners and find the chapter in the tri state area. You can also try the Rockler store. The woodturning folks are a very caring, sharing group and will be of great support as you learn how to turn and finish wood. The lathe, tools and wood may not be cheap but it is a great hobby which may lead to projects beyond tops. The work of Ed Davidson, Chris Neff, and Eric Wolf on this forum will be an inspiration for you. Good luck and turn safely!
