I think you should stain it dark: it will go more with the theme.

The question is: have you spun it? 
I bet you do not dare a boomerang >:D (seriously don't be foolish like me: it is painful!)

ah ah !!  1st time i got a serious hit in the palm
after , with a glove it boomerangs easily, wrapping the string "à la " hollow point
the spikes produce a buzzing sound , but they turn down the spin time because of air friction
i'll paint it black as you recommend
and next will be a trompo bearing to be crucified >:D >:D

Wow, you actually boomerang the top!  :o  8)   I quit trying with my Richy's, after if drew blood from all 5 fingers on my catching hand.  Now what I do are trapezes, which are much safer.
