This Wednesday is International Top Spinning Day
« on: October 09, 2012, 07:24:37 PM »

Second Wednesday of October means "International Top Spinning Day" (link).  This event was created years ago by of the The Top Lady, Judith Schulz, from the Burlington Spinning Top (& Yo-Yo) Museum.  So, don't let the whole day pass without spinning a top!!!

Last year I asked for photos spinning a top with a newspaper of the day, but I got too few responses and could not make the slide show I wanted.  My apologies to everyone who contributed (I may used some of those in other videos).  So I will not ask for any this time.  But feel free to post a photo you take on this thread.  Who knows, if it is good enough it will be nominated for this year's photo contest and may win.

I went by our pre-school kids and they were playing with legos.  So I told them today is world top spinning day and I was wondering what kind of tops could be made out of legos.  When I went back a little later they had half a dozen spinning tops made out of legos.

Then in my office I had a package with some nice whistling monobolos in it.  They made some nice sounds!  I can't wait to show the kids with their lego tops.

This is going to be a good day!!!

Great photo!  You should send it to the Top Lady.

I spun tops this morning, but I think I will spin some more before the day is over.

Well, I found out at 11:25PM
Spun a finger top and threw 9 different tops including my home made Koma style top that spins for a minute 45 sec with a moderate throw, A crazy tin cone I got on ebay and a Mexican trompo that was gift from a dear friend.  (why does trompo not pass spell check?)

A boy from our youth group just texted me to say that today (Friday October 12th) is World Top Spinning day.  He said he found this out online somewhere!

Last year it fell in fact on October 12th, but the World Top Spinning Day is the second Wednesday of October. I don't think it explicitly says so on the Top Museum site, but if you look at all the past dates, that is the case.

If you take into account that every year the day of the week moves back one day in the calendar, except when it is leap year when it moves two days, the date repeats every 5 or 11 years (always falls between the 8th and the 14th). The next WTSD on a Columbus Day will be in 2016.

It is cold and overcast here in Michigan.  Nevertheless, I just went out and played for a half hour.  Spun tops, juggled and tossed the diabolo a little.  Just remember "better late than never" is my middle name.
