Well, I screwed up.  I was thinking the top at the upper right corner was a YYJ but it is actually Yomega (YYJ did come out with another top that is wrapped like a yo-yo, but it is not that one). I think both czyoyo and SirBoot32 deserve something for the effort.

Bonus quiz (if anybody still wants to try  ). Whoever has more correct guesses gets a (green) Mexican bearing top (or something else if you already have one).  There are 3 tops on the picture that due to the passage of time don't work exactly as they were designed to. Guess at least one of them. The points are: +1 for each correct guess (maximum 3 points) and -0.5 points for each wrong guess (minimum score -1.5!).  You can just try to guess one of the tops, two or all three.  Oh, and you need a score higher than zero to win. Again, 24 hours contest.

There is a pump top in there that doesn't work.

Ok, to make things easier, here is a photo with the tops numbered:



To enter the contest you just have to provide one, two or three numbers between 1 and 28.
For example: "4", "2 and 6" or "6, 20 and 22".  Only one entry per person (if you change your mind, you can post a new entry that will invalidate the first one.  Of course, comments explaining the reasoning behind your voting are encouraged.

If two people have the same number of points, the first one to post wins.

The contest is extended until Wednesday at 5PM (GMT-6).

The problems with the tops just happened because of age and would have happened anyway if they had not been played.
The O-Ring on the Spintastics does not count as it does not appreciable influence how it works.
The old rubber on the Wiz-z-zer tip could have been a valid guess. In fact, I spun it with a string as I was afraid that it could disintegrate. On the other hand, it may still take a few more spins, so we will not consider that a problem.

I suggest you go with just one number or you may finish with negative points  As always, my quizzes are tricky
I may clarify a few more things but I will not announce a winner until the end of the contest.

I updated the photo as I had forgotten to number one top, but that does not affect John's numbers.
There is no penalty to choose the right top for the wrong reason, so don't be shy explaining why you chose a top.

EDIT:  I had forgotten to number another top!  I think 29 is the final number.

Oh, John, you really were on the right track, but . . .

Yes, the blue liquid inside Top # 1 has mostly evaporated as John correctly said.  This top is a demonstration of centripetal force: when it spins the liquid at the bottom rises to the perimeter and can be seen through the clear walls. By the way it is not a pump top, it is started with a ripcord.

The batteries of top Top # 2, a recent Chinese version of the wiz-z-zer still have power. But John had the right idea because there are two more tops on the picture that use batteries.  Top #7 plays music and lights up when it spins and to my surprise still works.  By the way, it is not a drawing top. On the other hand, the "Leprechaun top" Top #19 (actually Boomer a tomboy girl from the Burger King's Club gang) should have a light come on but the battery has drained since 1997.

John was eery prescient when he said the third top had "dried up." But it was not #7 but Top #3!  This antique peg top has an unusual feature: the steel tip is backed by a black rubber section:



After all these years (80+ ?) the rubber has completely dried up and hardened. I am not sure if the rubber was meant to protect the top from impact or give it bounciness, but it was its main distinctive feature and it is no working as rubber anymore.

So . . .  if anybody had just selected Top #1, he/she would have won.  Jon is the "moral winner" I guess, but his two misses left him with 0 points. The rest had one hit and one miss for a total of 0.5 points.  And the winner for being first is Dick. Congrats!  And thanks all for participating.

   If I recall correctly, at the time the contest ended you had chosen 1 & 7.  That is a pity, because it would have saved me the postage of the prize 

I wonder if all of you guys would have picked #1 if John would not have given his reason for choosing it.
