Giulia di legno
« on: September 19, 2010, 03:21:03 PM »

I think that I have the Italian right..........in English it would be "Wooden Guilia"......

If it hasn't been clear from some of my recent posts, I'm enamored with Maurizio's tops.  Not only is the tip design exceptional, but the shape of the Guilia seems just right to me............

So............I bought a bag of tips from Maurizio and set about to do what i frequently do; make a wooden version of an already great skill toy.
The first "Giulia di legno" is made from hard Maple with a white Delrin tip section.  It is amazingly close to the real Guilia; it's within a few hundredths of an inch in all dimensions:

The Maple is lighter than Delrin so Guilia di legno numero uno weighs 73.5 grams (vs. 82 grams for the stock Guilia).  So, with Guilia di legno numero due I picked a heavier wood......Cocobolo.  The resulting top weighs 93 grams, which to me is about perfect.  In addition, the Cocobolo makes one handsome top  Here's the picture:

Wait for it.......

Almost there.....

Off to mke another one  ;D ;D ;D

Pretty awesome!  Terrific pictures.  Wish I could give them a toss.  You will have to tell us how they respond.

Superb work!

How on Earth do you copy the shapes so precisely: just by free hand and repeat measurements or do you use mechanical help (i.e. a pantograph)? How do you make the walls so thin: just by touch and feel?

I'm really speechless every time i see how Erik works and the stuff he is able to take out of "simple" wood. This time i have some words that are rolling and rumbling on my mind, words as wonderful, incredible, ecc, thoughts about how much I have still to learn about tops, at most wooden tops; but i must thank to you because you give nobless and finesses to my work, your is art. To read words like "If it hasn't been clear from some of my recent posts, I'm enamored with Maurizio's tops.  Not only is the tip design exceptional, but the shape of the Guilia seems just right to me............" gives me great satisfaction (i can not belive to read this :) ), but i must remind that the tip comes out from the collaboration of Chris, everyone must thank him for this shape :) .

Maurizio

P.S.Thank you, Teacher Erik
